Interesting article on Wban about the girl in England that has implants and is being denied the right to participate in amateur contests. There are plenty of girls in the US that have them and I don't see it really being a problem, but I guess I'm not a doctor... www.spartaboxing.com

Doctors often take a dim view of the risks of boxing and other contact sports. It's a personal thing to decide whether the benefits (confidence, physical and mental fitness) to an individual boxer outweigh the risks she is running. If we all avoided all the things any docs say are risky, then any sports where concussions are likely (boxing, football, soccer, horse riding) would be declared out of bounds to both genders! Docs should provide input to athletes about these risks so athletes can make informed individual choices about participating, but docs should not have the last word unless the risks are high enough to be a imminent danger of permanent injury or impairment. So I'm ok about experienced ring docs stopping fights where they see immediate risk of a head injiury for example - but banning a girl with implants from boxing at all seems way over the top to me. There are still countries, and Britain's been one at least until recently, where misgivings from conservative minded medics get used as cover by conservative boxing establishments to restrict women's participation. The Aussie state of New South Wales has only just allowed women's boxing AT ALL. . www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/12/19/2451555.htm

It seems like such an obvious thing, but I had never given it much thought. I'm going to check out that article.
