Four-time world champion boxer Carina Moreno of Watsonville defeated Sharon Gaines in a unanimous decision Friday at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore. They were fighing an eight-round, catch-weight bout at 110 pounds.
Moreno [21-1, 6 KOs] dominated the fight with the judges' scorecards reading 79-73, 80-72, 80-72.
Moreno, who holds world titles at 105 and 108 pounds, took the non-title match with the hopes of eventually gaining a third title at 112 pounds. She said she focused on using her strength more than her speed to beat Gaines [11-12-1, 3 KOs].
"I felt pretty good in there. I changed things around a little bit to use my power more and sat on my punches a little more," Moreno said.
Moreno said she felt strong despite fighting off a cold the past couple days.
"In the seventh and eighth round, I could tell she was getting winded," Moreno said. "My corner told me to keep going after her in the last seconds of the eighth. I could see she was close to going down but didn't."
