Uh Rick... she already has been beat, she just got a few gifts. Mary Jo didn't do her job, as she said. The holding, moving with combinations and trying to headbut style of Holly Holm coupled with Mary Jo's lack of agression is what led to this. I just read Chris Cozzone's fight report and it was one of the most biased and insulting compositions of crap against Mary Jo Sanders. It reminded me of some of the stuff those pro-Calzaghe guys write. I didn't like the biased way he covers her before, and when I measure it against his reports of the other fights that took place, it's disgusting. David Avila's report was a hell of a lot better; the selection of photos Cozzone chose were also a bit My hat goes off to Holly; she did win the fight. My hat really goes off to Chevelle as well. Holm-Sanders was the only fight on the card I got wrong, but that's okay. Mary Jo Sanders is an amazing talent and she did not execute. Even Muhammad Ali had off nights and Holyfield seemed to always fight on level with his competition. I see Christy Martin in Mary Jo's future. Or she could go ahead and fight Ann Wolfe. Jizelle Salandy wanted to fight the winner of this fight and they can go ahead and have their track meet. Or Holm and Sanders can rematch in Detroit, but this time, it'll be on free television. Overall, the card was a big success and the week was a great one for women's boxing.

Holm is a great fighter in New mexico but take her out of New Mexico and that would make her legitimate fighter. The photos of Sanders made me want to cry, really bad but like Wendy Rordriguez..Sanders needs to get back in that gym train fight harder Her next opponent should be some one in her weight class more like Fountain and Pepporozzi then fight Ramsey and then Ragosina in my opinon

I can easily admit that Holm is a conditioned fighter, her speed is amazing and she deserves the right to be called the hometown hero of Newmexico but even MAribel Zurita fought in Germany and even though she was robbed blinded she stood for her country and where she came from. Elena and even Natalie Brown have fought in different countries and been robbed but kept their heads up high. Holly is a good fighter but to be better than good, she has to overcome the fear of staying in her home state and moving around and fighting those opponents. Rick i never called you stupid at all, i just said it was stupid to say that, no man, woman or child is stupid but a person can act that way if they do try. I want the sport to be on the covers of newspapers and magazines even more so that fighters like Holm can be recoginzed more like male boxers and not just a bump on the road, or a sideline man.

Maybe you shouldn't open your posts with a rude statement. It's hard to get past that without losing one's cool. Holm just convincingly defeated a bigger, unbeaten fighter who many thought would beat her. She took Sanders' best shot and made her fight her fight. Holm deserves props for that. Plus, her image is pristine. Her image should be on covers, and I don't mean on Playboy. The area where Holm fights is currently a hotbed of boxing in the States. The promoters made history with their show, but I would like to know why they didn't make it available to much of the USA.

She just keeps getting better and better... I did NOT see the Holm-Sanders fight but I will as soon as I can. On the surface, a "lethargic" Mary JO Sanders seems surprising but when you go from Detroit at lets say 300 feet above sea level to The Duke City, at 5200 feet above sea level...in a week...well you had better bring some oxygen after round 5. YOU HAVE TO TRAIN THERE FOR A MONTH!!! I did find this statement by an Albq. sportswriter very odd: "Holm cookin'? Hardly. The judges who declared Albuquerque's Holly Holm the lopsided winner of her boxing showdown with Detroit's Mary Jo Sanders on Friday night weren't from around here. But, then, it wouldn't have mattered if the judges had been from Mars, Jupiter or Sanders' hometown of Detroit. Holm, thoroughly outboxing and often outslugging the daughter of Detroit Lions football Hall of Famer Charlie Sanders, scored a clear-cut unanimous decision at Isleta Casino & Resort." Who says the judges have to be from Albuquerque to be "Holm Cookers"? And who were the judges? How often have they judges Holm fights? Good questions for a journalist who's opening, "Holm cookin?"suggests what many have suspected. All of that aside, I would like to hear what Mary Jo says about the fight. I suspect she was frustrated for 4-6 rounds chasing Holm around the ring and then she ran out of gas in 7 to 10...these are just guesses. I do know the Holm - Saccurato Fight was NOT close to the way I would have scored the fight and I would bet that if you gave a tape of that fight to say 15 judges from around the world, 15 would say the same thing. ANNE WON! She won for making the fight, harder punches and dictating the action plus throwing more punches. So does anyone know who those judges were? TD

www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080615/SPORTS18/806150621/1066/SPORTS18Sanders longs for a rematch Boxer says she won't retire after first loss BY MIKE BRUDENELL • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • June 15, 2008 Charlie Sanders spoke to his daughter, Mary Jo Sanders, minutes after she suffered her first loss as a professional fighter Friday night in Albuquerque, N.M. The Lions' Hall of Fame tight end kept it simple: "This is where the true test of who you are comes in," Sanders said. "Get out there and hold your head up high. Be the real champion you are." Saturday morning, Mary Jo, 34, was still feeling the pain and shock of her defeat by Holly Holm, 26, in their International Female Boxing Association junior middleweight title clash, but her spirit was intact. "My heart hurts -- it's something I've never felt before, and I didn't think I would," said Sanders (25-1, 8 KOs) from Albuquerque. "I didn't stick to my game plan. I didn't land my straight right hand, didn't move side to side. But will I retire? No, no. After one loss, this makes it a bigger challenge to win." The judges scored the fight in Holm's favor, 98-92, 98-92 and 97-93. Sanders' manager and trainer, Jimmy Mallo, was not happy with the scoring, although he would not suggest his fighter won. "I think the scoring was ludicrous, off the charts," Mallo said. "... Mary Jo landed the cleaner, harder punches. It should have been a split decision, perhaps a draw." Mallo, who said he would seek a rematch with Holm (22-1-2, 6 KOs) later this year, felt Sanders needed to dominate the fight to win. "When you are in someone's backyard, plain and simple, you have to take it to them," Mallo said. "Holly is real tough, we knew that. She took a couple of big shots from Mary Jo. ... But I'll still place everything on a rematch. We've seen this girl's A game and we'll see it again." Sanders will return to Detroit and take a couple of weeks, Mallo said. "We're going to sit down, go back to the drawing board," he said. "Holm's camp is definitely receptive to a rematch, and the only place that makes sense is Detroit." Despite the setback, Sanders is determined to return to the ring stronger and wiser. "Jimmy got me ready," Sanders said. "I didn't execute. I've got to learn from this fight."

I knew that Moreno would be too gritty and too experienced for the very talented Hawaiian Mongoose, but I thought Chevelle would fade in her fight, but she proved me wrong by doing just the opposite. Chevelle was motivated and in condition to keep up the pressure in every round. Great job. Overlooked in the Holm-Sanders fight was the 8-year AGE advantage Holly enjoyed.

Hi Rick
Yes Chevelle was on top of her game that night. She has been getting better with every fight. Jeannine could have fought smarter but didn,t and wants no excuses for losing. She told me that she feels Chevelle deserves this special reward to ad to her lengthy career. Jeannine has been misquoted as saying that she thinks she won the fight...she does not. She is disappointed in her performance and wishes she had fought a smarter fight. Allan

After I got a chance to see the fight, I have to say this headline makes me laugh. I'm surprised anyone would be very impressed with Holm's performance that night. And if she is the P4P best boxer, female boxing really deserves all the criticism it gets.
It is debatable if she even won that fight; it was a close bout, so a close decision either way would have been acceptable IMHO, but scoring this 98-92 is ridiculous and the fact that two judges came to the same outrageous result seems suspicious. Also, Holm made sure to solidify her reputation as a dirty fighter: storming in head first all the way through the second half of the fight, holding Sanders by her neck when both fell to the ground (which was very dangerous actually) - and what the hell were those implied kicks in the last round supposed to be? One point should have been deduced for that alone.

She just keeps getting better and better... Sanders won the fight, 5-4-1 and possibly 5-3-2. Although there were some rounds that were swing rounds. Here's why; - Sanders landed the harder blows - Sanders made the fight, dictated most of the action and worked Holm around the ring. - Holm's lunging-smother headbutts were borderline illegal. Why was there NO warning? - Inside action was always broken up too soon giving Holm an edge. - the Judges weren't watching the same fight...some of their scores were absurd. Mary Jo is a terrific athlete, but she seemed befuddled NOT by Holly's side to side movement but by Holly's bull-rush type of smother move, which is straight ahead, tie up and or head-charge. That movement seemed to freeze Mary Jo. I would have expected her to throw like 50 times more uppercuts into that move, she didn't. As an offensive move, it gains Holly almost nothing, except it looks like she is doing something other than running away. Holly too is a terrific athlete but her fighting style is very odd...she seems to throw good punches but as a secondary thought, first thought is always moving away or around an opponent. The karate jump punches in round 10 were odd. To me, Mary Jo won the fight easily but I can see at least 3 rounds which could have gone either way, I gave them to the fighter who was making the fight. I can't see the scores turned in anywhere but in the Duke City. Sorry, but its was NOT scored fairly or correctly. IMO. I did see Chevelle bomb the hell out Garside in a very entertaining fight. And Garside fought good, she just didn't work straight in as Chevelle was very wide. But a fun fight to watch. I missed Holly's fight and the Hawaiian Mongoose's fight. Carina is one tough fighter so I will be looking for the replay of that one. TD

Uh ohhhhhhhhhhhh... even TD is saying Mary Jo won the fight... TD and I have disagreed on a lot of things over the years, and we've had some great debates... but it looks like the party is unified this time. I couldn't aggree with TD's analysis of Holm's style more.
