insidewomensboxing.comMrdjenovich to stay at 130 WBC and IWBF superfeatherweight champion Jelena Mrdjenovich, has decided to relinquish the WIBF Lightweight title she won on June 23, against Mia St. John, in favor of staying at the 130 pound limit. The 24 year-old, Edmonton, fighter, however, has not ruled out a return to the 135 pound ranks at some future date. “We are staying at 130 for now, but will fight at 135 if a good opportunity arises,” said Mrdjenovich. “I will take whatever fights will come, but my natural weight is 130, as I walk around during training at 135." In her last bout with St. John, Mrdjenovich, weighed in at 133 pounds without dieting and keeping fully hydrated for the fight. This is no surprise. Mrdjenovich did not perform well (a 4 on a scale of 10 according to her team) in her bout with Mia St. John, a fighter who has stated she is not of the elite boxers. Mrdjenovich was hit more in this fight than in any other with the exception of the bouts with Layla McCarter. And Mrdjenovich failed to provide the expected stoppage of St. John which, as one writer stated, would have made Mrdjenovich a celebrity recognizable by her first name Jelena. They are many other tough lightweights who would be difficult opponents for Mrdjenovich. By dropping back to super featherweight, Mrdjenovich will maintain a height and reach advantage over her opponents - not so as a lightweight. So the plan to increase the number of potential opponents by moving up a weight class has been scrapped for, in my opinion, a safer weight class.
