Gizelle Salandy will be off to Germany to box against Karolina Lukastic for the WIBF and GBU junior middleweight titles on September 7.
This was one of the announcements made by her promoter Boxu Potts at a press conference at The Mass Camp yesterday.
Salandy, already the holder of seven world titles will be up against a formidable opponent, who has a 7-0 record and will have the edge of fighting at home.
Nothing is being left to chance as, in addition to her regular training entourage—Ulric Johnson, Kevin Placid—Wayne Greene, former Royal Navy physical training instructor has joined the team. This is to ensure, not only boxing and top physical condition but also mental and psychological preparedness.
Greene is a former Belgian champion who has had more that 120 amateur bouts and 33 professional bouts, losing just two of them.
He said he is pleased with what he has seen of Salandy, her boxing and her discipline and he is confident that she will win the bout.
Potts was disappointed that Salandy, like Sinnette and Manswell, is forced to ply her trade outside as boxing is in a mess here with boxers literally hounded out of the country to get bouts. Potts has been more than adequate in seeking and getting the best for his fighters but he is being opposed by many in the TTBBC.
He is taking every effort to limit the possibility of bias in the bout and is working to have as international a set of officials as possible. He is concerned that to win in Germany you have to knock out your opponent.
Salandy got sponsorship and was advised by a member of the Board whose name he called, to keep the sponsorship and not let Potts know about it.
“Is that how supposed advisors of our youth show them the path to dishonesty and corruption?” Potts asked
He continued, “These people are in positions of authority on the TTBBC and should be removed. The Government needs to disband the board and appoint a single commissioner who has the acumen to run the business and a sufficient knowledge and care for the sport to see it progress.”
Meanwhile, Salandy is under the guidance of men who know the requirements of the sport and is being guided to the discipline and commitment that would see her victorious, completing what the Soca Warriors started in Germany by coming back with two more titles.
