JIZELLE SALANDY will face her toughest opponent to date when she takes on American Dakota Stone, the number one contender for her World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight world title.
Yesterday, promoter Buxo Potts announced the WBC have informed Salandy she must defend the title against 38-year-old Stone and they are likely to clash in late April, or the first week of May, at Skinner Park, San Fernando.
"The WBC has mandated Stone as their number one contender and the WIBA has also mandated her as heir top contender, so, this is a very tough fight. There can be no questions about her quality," Potts said yesterday at a press conferene at Mau Pa Members Club, Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook.
Stone, with a record of eight victories, four defeats and five draws, is a highly-rated fighter. She is coming off a victory over Tricia Turton, who is also well-considered. She has also beaten Yvonne Reis, who Salandy turned back last weekend.
Stone has lost to top fighters such as Ann Wolfe and Leatita Robinson. She is due back in the ring on Saturday in Sweden against Aasa Sandell, before coming to Trinidad to fight Salandy.
At yesterday's press conference, Potts announced he is making an effort to have Kevin Placide fight either former Guyanese welterweight world champion Andrew "Six Heads" Lewis or Denny Dalton.
On Saturday, Placide won the World Boxing Empire (WBE) welterweight title, although neither he nor his Bajan opponent Christopher Henry was ranked by the body before the fight. Still, Plaicide said he is enjoying the attention that comes with his devestating 11th-round knockout victory. Unbeaten in his last eight fights, Placide (8-2-1) has set lofty goals.
