Trinidad Guardian Thursday 8 February 2007 www.guardian.co.tt/sports1.htmlIn the space of three weeks, two opponents have pulled out on Jizelle Salandy. Yvonne Reis, pulled after announcing that she was going to Africa to fight another opponent, and yesterday Roselyn Morales’ manager stated: “Rose Morales does not want to fight Salandy.” No reason was given by the 170 lbs, Morales, as to why she withdrew from the fight. Morales had requested four airline tickets, for herself and her handlers, which was granted but she unexpectedly pulled out. Two suitable and formidable opponents were contacted to fight Salandy and both have agreed. The first is Shelly Burton, who agreed to fight Salandy in June. The fight was originally scheduled for March 24 at Skinner Park, San Fernando, but she is currently having reconstructive surgery done to her nose, due to damages suffered at the hands of Laila Ali when she last fought. The other opponent is Angelica Martinez, who fought the likes of Hollie Holmes, the welterweight champion of the world and lost but thereafter fought the great Christy Martin and won. She also fought Yvonne Reis and won, as well as Salandy’s last opponent, Mariem Brakache and won that fight too. Martinez is a 30-year-old Mexican American, who holds a record of six wins, two losses and a draw with two knockouts. She will be a tough test for Salandy. ©2005-2006 Trinidad Publishing Company Limited Designed by: Randall Rajkumar-Maharaj · Updated daily by: Sheahan Farrell

Trinidad Express Wednesday 14 Feb 2007www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article?id=161103459Salandy ready for next challengeBy Roger Seepersad JIZELLE Salandy is confident and ready for her big Hi-Lo Food Stores-sponsored "Magnificent Seven" world title fight next month in preparation for her bout against Laila Ali in September. I thought Ali was giving boxing a rest?"It will be a night to remember," exclaimed fight promoter Boxu Potts, who spoke passionately at yesterday's media launch of the March 24 extravaganza at the Mas Camp Pub on Ariapita Avenue. Potts noted Salandy's accomplishments last year and believes strongly in her ability to come out on top against her older and more experienced opponents in the months to come. Salandy also expressed her satisfaction with her training and is looking forward to her next opponent, Yvonne Reis, who has a record of nine wins and six losses.
Reis pulled out of fighting Salandy in the first instance, but her fight in Africa against Dakota Stones was cancelled and she is now "back on board", according to Potts. Also scheduled to be in action on the Magnificent Seven card is 32-year-old welterweight Kevin Placide, who has been given the opportunity to fight for the World Boxing Empire, North American Boxing Council and Unified Boxing Organisation titles. If Placide is successful in his bout, he will be eligible to fight for premier titles. The energetic and vociferous Potts outlined his plot to bring world titles to Trinidad and Tobago and to make T&T "the Mecca of boxing in the Caribbean". "Once there is a title available, a Trinibagonian will be given first preference," said Potts. The Magnificent Seven fight night takes place on March 24 at Skinner Park in San Fernando, with the first bout scheduled for 8.30 p.m. Reis, glad to know that u r back on board.

Triniadad Newsday Reis coming to fight Salandy By ZAID MOHAMMED Sports Editor Saturday, February 17 2007www.newsday.co.tt/sport/0,52535.html EXPERIENCED American boxer Yvonne Reis looks certain to be the opponent to face Trinidad and Tobago world female champion on March 24 at Skinner Park in San Fernando.
After initially refusing to honour a commitment to fight the undefeated teenaged Salandy, Reis was lured back by the astute negotiating skills of promoter Boxu Potts. The internationally known match-maker confirmed yesterday that Reis was expected in Trinidad and Tobago next week to officially sign the contract for the ten-round bout against Salandy. After Reis suddenly pulled out of the March 24 bout, originally scheduled for Bermuda last month, Potts immediately contacted Decota Stone, who the World Boxing Council (WBC) ranks as their No 1 middleweight. Stone, based in California is also the No 1 contender in the Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) ratings and is also ranked No 2 by the World Boxing Association (WBA). However she insisted on a US$12,000 purse and four airline tickets for her entourage which was rejected outright by Potts whose experience in negotiating international boxing contests surprised the Stone camp. He then informed Stone that she was perilously close to pricing herself out of the fight and named several other top ranked boxers, including Tricia Turton, who would accept the fight for close to half what she was demanding. Potts also told both Stone and Reis that they risked losing their ranking if they refuse to fight Salandy after which the latter verbally agreed to accept the offer for US$6,000. Reis was recently stripped of her middleweight crown because of her inactivity but is currently rated higher than Stone. At stake will be seven international championship belts offered by the WBA, WBC, WIBA, North American Boxing Conference (NABC), World Boxing Empire (WBE), Women’s Boxing Federation (WBF) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF). The fight is being billed as “The Magnificent Seven” and has already received the support of Hi Lo Food Stores and the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs. Potts said yesterday that a proposal is also before the Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs Senator Joan Yuille-Williams and he is optimistic that they will come on board to ensure the continuing development of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s best female boxing talent. Salandy is undefeated in 13 professional bouts and is currently in the middle of preparations for the bout at the Roy Jones Gym, Independence Square North in Port-of-Spain. She is being trained by former world rated lightweight boxer Ulric Johnson with ex-former heavyweight boxer Kim Quashie as her manager. Potts is grooming Salandy for a fight against undefeated American Laila Ali, the daughter of former legendary heavyweight champion of the world Muhammad Ali. Salandy last fought in December when she gained a hard-fought unanimous decision against Morocco-born Marium Breakache over ten rounds at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.

Trinidad Newsday Mary Jo Sanders Thursday, February 22 2007www.newsday.co.tt/sport/0,52764.html THE PREPARATION of Trinidad and Tobago’s world female boxing champion Giselle Salandy is on track for her March 24 fight against American Yvonne Reis at Skinner Park, San Fernando. However her reputation precedes her across the globe as Mary Jo Sanders, who is considered one of the best middleweight fighters in the world, has turned down an offer to fight her. It is believed that Sanders is reluctant to fight the undefeated Salandy for fear of being defeated and lose her ranking and prospects of future lucrative bouts. Boxing promoter and international match-maker Boxu Potts said yesterday he was disappointed that Sanders and her handlers have balked at the offer to come up against Salandy, holder of the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight crowns. Potts said that Sanders has instead expressed a desire to take on Scroller Carrington, who is making an effort to climb up the world rankings. But Potts pointed out also that Carrington is scheduled to clash with Teresa Perozzi for the Women’s Boxing Association (WBA) middleweight title sometime next month in Bermuda. He questioned why Sanders is considered one the best middleweight fighters in the world but does not want to face top class opponents like Salandy. He said there will come a time when decisions will be made for Carrington to come up against Sanders in the future but maintained that the Siparia-based boxer will keep her commitment to fight Perrozi next month. Potts pointed out that Salandy is ready to take on any middleweight fighter in the world which is in a division heavier than she has ever fought before. “Salandy will fight in a phone booth, in a police station, in her bedroom or anywhere else as long as the price is right,” Potts said yesterday. “We know Mary Jo Sanders gets in excess of US$40,000 per fight, so they are not going to offer Salandy US$20,000 to fight them in the US,” Potts charged. He said that he is confident that the 19-year-old Salandy can command similar purses by virtue of her skill and the support she has been receiving fighting at home. She comes up against Reis in a ten-rounder billed as the “Magnificent Seven” in which at least seven international belts will be at stake. The promotion is gathering momentum and Potts confirmed yesterday that Hi Lo Food Stores have come on board to ensure that the card is a success. He also revealed that help is forthcoming from the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs who is keen to ensure that Salandy is given the oportunity to achieve her great potential. And he said that approval of a proposal is expected soon from Senator Joan Yuille-Williams, Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs.

AFTER initially rejecting Yvonne Reis as an inferior opponent to fight Trinidad and Tobago's Jizelle Salandy, their junior-middlewight world champion, the World Boxing Association (WBA) have re-instated 40-year-old American Yvonne Reis for their upcoming fight on March 24 at Skinner Park, San Fernando. Reis is due to fight 20-year-old Salandy for the WBA and WBC junior-middleweight world titles. But the American is not ranked by the WBA in the middleweight, junior-middleweight or any divisions and her standing as a suitable opponent was questioned by the world body after they saw that her record included ten defeats in 17 fights. Reis has fought just two good fighters, losing twice to unbeaten Letita Robinson and once to Mary Joe Sanders. The Sunday Express was informed that when local promoter Buxo Potts submitted Reis as Salandy's opponent, the WBA initially refused to sanction the American as a suitable adversary. But, after persistent appeals by Potts, rescinded their decision. And Melchoir Taylor, chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board, said the local sanctioning body also had a problem with the American fighter. Trinidad Express Ian Prescott iprescott@trinidadexpress.com Sunday, March 18th 2007 WBA re-instate Reis www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article?id=161117566"We (T&TBB) only sanctioned her after the WBA changed their mind," Taylor said. The WBA had first sent Potts an e-mail rejecting Reis because she has a poor record and had lost ten fights. But, then they reconsidered because she had held the WBC middleweight title for a short time last year before being stripped of it. "They also saw that she had fought a few good fighters and therefore they cleared Reis and recommended her as a formidable opponent," Taylor said. "Otherwise, we would not have approved the fight." However, Reis' record indicates she is far from formidable. The Florida-based fighter had lost almost two-thirds of her fights and has also only beaten poor fighters. Three of Reis' six wins have also come against boxers who had just a single win on their record, and two against opponents with two victories, while her biggest win was against non-descript Kenyan fighter Conjestina Acheng last year for the vacant WBC middleweight world title. Acheng had eight victories at the time, but has lost three of her last five fights.

Trinidad Express Monday, March 19th 2007 www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article?id=161117999Taylor: Salandy's titles fringe but legit THE chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board said yesterday that while some of the seven world titles held by T&T's Jizelle Salandy are fringe titles, he believes that all are legitimate. Melchoir Taylor's comments came after his mid-week disclosure that the T&T Boxing Board was willing to pay the sanction fee for just three of her titles for the seven-title fight with 40-year-old American middleweight Yvonne Reis, on March 24 at Skinner Park. Salandy holds the WBA, WBC, NABC, WBE, IWBF, IWBA and IFBA crowns. "All Salandy's title are legitimate. While the WBA and the WBC belts are the most recognisable, all are legitimate".
