Tapia returns, Holm unifies
by Chris Cozzone
In what could turn out to be the top two biggest fight cards of the year for New Mexico, Fresquez Productions, Inc. will be headlining the return of five-time world champion Johnny Tapia (55-5-2, 28 KOs) and two-time world champ Holly Holm (16-1-2, 5 KOs) in their next two fight cards. Tapia's return to the Duke City could come as soon as Feb. 23, and no later than March 16 or 17--the date should be set soon. On the same card, Albuquerque's Hector Munoz (17-1, 11 KOs) is matched up against Juarez/El Paso's Miguel "Conan" Torrecillas (16-5-1, 7 KOs), and San Antonio contender Gabriel Elizondo (22-2, 10 KOs) will rematch El Paso’s Cesar Lopez (20-3, 4 KOs). A rematch with Willie Villanueva (3-0, 1 KO) and Gabe Gonzales (1-1, 1 KO) is also pencilled in. Then, on Thursday, Mar. 22, at Isleta Casino, south of Albuquerque, and televised on FOX Sports' "The Best d**n Sports Show", Holly Holm will unify all four major welterweight belts (WBA/WBC/WIBA/IFBA plus IBA) in women's boxing, against an opponent to be revealed in the next 10 days. Currently, Holm holds the IFBA at 154, the WBA at 147 and the Women's IBA belt at 140. After both Mary Jo Sanders (22-0, 6 KOs) and Laila Ali (23-0, 20s) have turned down a fight with Holm--Ali passing up her biggest payday of $150,000--promoter Fresquez says he will campaign Holm as a unifier of world title belts. Two more women's world titles will be televised on the card: IFBA super bantam champ Jackie Chavez (9-2, 3 KOs), of Albuquerque and IFBA featherweight champ Kelsey Jeffries (36-9-1, 3 KOs), of Gilroy, Calif. will defend their belts against opponents TBA. Stay tuned for more as these cards are developed.

Since Terri Blair holds the IBA Welterweight title and the others are vacant, Blair seems to be the obvious opponent.
Holm’s last six opponents – Christy Martin, Mia St. John, Shadina Pennybaker, Angel Martinez, Jane Couch, and Tricia Turton – criticized the Albuquerque officiating.
Since Fresquez Productions claims Mary Jo Sanders turned down a fight with Holm, and since Sanders’ promoter Fight Night Incorporated stated this wasn’t true and that Team Holm won’t compete outside Albuquerque, maybe Team Holm and Fresquez Productions should consider a compromise.
A referee and judges from outside of New Mexico, chosen by the commissions and with no ties to the promoters or teams involved would lend more credibility to this contest. So whoever is Holm’s next opponent, the bout would be scored much fairer than the forty percent hometown bias factor I estimate Holm receives. Women’s boxing does not need a nationally televised fight with scoring that doesn’t match the ring performance.
