Is it just me, or is anyone else wondering who in the huzz-eck these one-named Japanese fighters are?
I'm guessing that "Gypsy's" and "Jet's" parents did not in fact have these names put on their newborn female babies birth certificates. Just as we have seen with the Thai fighters who adopt poetic ring names as their proper names, allowing this practice makes it next to impossible to figure out who these women really are and how much ring experience (be it boxing, kickboxing, Muay thai, or MMA) that they really have.
Doesn't the Japanese Boxing Commission require all pro boxers to present valid ID with their legal names?
Can I start using a symbol instead of a name?
Signed,
;-) a.k.a. the fighter formerly known as Dee Hamaguchi
Good point Dee.
As for "Seri", i strongly suspect she is in reality Seri Saito , who is 0-1 in kb and who has never boxed before. ".
And certainly, fighting under the name of "Tsunami" vs "Seri" is totally unacceptable. Is "Gigi" fighting "Lolita" on the undercard?
Perhaps in a vat of jello?
it sounds a little like pro wrestling, with the bogus names and potential for "worked" fights, mismatches, male vs female fights etc...doesnt it?
IMHO, anyone using a nickname should always place their nickname in parentheses along their real first AND last name: eg, "sugar" Ray Robinson".
Below is a message i posted on my own KB website outlining the problems caused by the abuse of Thai ring names.
I hope Dee W, Sue Fox, and the people at boxrec.com (among others) will take the time to plow thorugh this and see why
its absolutely essential to the integrity of female fighting sports that no website, sanctioning org, or record keepers, unwittingly aid and abet this fraud by "identifying" or "documenting" fighters who misuse "ring names" to achieve total anonymity. Fighting anonymously enables female fighters in poor countries to be misused and exploited when they fight under a multitude of identities In addition, it makes it far too easy to perpetrate all manner of fraud, plus the creation of unverifiablem and fraudulent records and fight results.
Regrettably, we dont know, and indeed may never know the true name/identity of many Thai fighters -due to the continued and chronic misuse of these misleading “ring names” which are not used anywhere else in the world. (I really hope this practice doesnt take hold in Japan)
It’s time for Thailand to join with the rest of the world, instead of clinging to this ancient practice which in effect, denies Thai women due recognition for their ring achievements.
It’s extremely difficult to document the achievements, or honor a fighter who fights under a “ring” name.
At the risk of being repetitive, fighter nicknames are perfectly fine as along as they are included in parentheses along with the fighters real name: for example: Erin “Nitro” Linley, Scott “Pitbull” Clark” Thomas “Hitman” Hearns, Karen “ 9mm” Ousey, Rick “The Jet” Roufus. etc.
But current “ring name” practice in Thailand, at the very least, enables fake fights to be fought under fake names, which then exploits poor, untrained Thai women (bar girls, etc) who are often desperate for money, and also creating cheap, fraudulent “wins” (usually quick KOs) for western fighters eager to go to Thailand to repair/improve their records.
I hope that all honest sanctioning bodies, record keepers, and reporters will join WIKBA in refusing to rank or recognize any person who does not furnish them with a legitimate (passport) real name.
Some very obvious Thai ring names such as: “siriporn” “daoprasuk” “nong” "nam" "noi”, "sukothai", “lek”, and prepositions such as "Sor" Nor" Vor" and "por" make positive idenfication of Thai fighters virtuallly impossible,.
I dont know what others think, but i think its ridiculous for a fighter to return from Thailand and not knowand be able to tell usn whom she fought. And its even more ridiculous for a Thai fighter to come to another country and not give the local commission their real passport name.
This practice has enabled dozens of unscrupulous greedy managers to lie habitually to promoters by stating that their fighter has as many as 40-50, 60 fights or more.
Often, when they do this, they (surprise surprise!) get quickly “KOd” by a local girl who often has less than a dozen fights. How naive they think (know) we are??
As Dee H, suggested, if I were a poor Thai, I could easily go to
another country and fight under the name “King of the Rng”, or some equally ridiculous moniker, turn my back on my opponent, or take a knee, force the ref to stop the fight, and came home unscathed, with a nice purse, and nobody would be the wiser...hmmm...
And for a Thai girl, I am sure that probably beats working a grueling, low wage, dead end job in Thailand.
Thats why I place a lot of the blame on the western Muay Thai community in Thailand for winking at this deplorable situation.
Sadly, they are rationalizing fraud under the name of “culture”.
But, we all need to take principled actions that discourage this practice and never refer to Thai fighters by ring names which are changed or modified just enough to enable them to maintain separate fight records under several different names.
Also, once Thai women begin using their real names, like Borpit Kinrum, and Wirum Forgnam do, they will become known and be mush more in demand outside Thailand where they can earn $200-350 us dollars per round-instead of the paltry $20 us dollars they now get for an entire 5 rd fight in thailand fighting under an assigned “ring name”.
Ring names also keep Thai women fighters totally isolated, anonymous and unknown to the world outside of their village, and therefore they are totally dependent on their managers and promoters in Thailand all too often misuse and exploit their
anonymity for personal gain. |
On the other hand, a person with a real name has an identity, and chance to make a future for herself, build some market value and gain some sorely needed independence.
I dont want to disrespect any country, or anybody’s culture, but is it really unfair, or unreasonable to expect a fighter, to simply provide their real name and their honest, unvarnished fight record when they fight?
For the life of me, I cant see how producing that small bit of information could harm, or seriously inconvenience a fighter-unless they are either working fights, or fabricating records, under multiple names. Can anyone explain that to me? I would be grateful.
Heres a fun hallenge to everyone on the board:
Try getting an honest, verifiable fight record for a Thai fighter-its worse than pulling teeth with a pair of pliers.
I challenge any person reading this thread to research any currently active female Thai fighter and ascertain their passport name, and get her complete verified fight record-including names of opponents, venue, and approximate fight dates- and then post it here. I will tell you now: It cannot be done. period!
Dee, I hate to see the misuse of ring names spreading to Japan. And I hope WBAN, and boxrec.com , and all sanctioning orgs others will refuse to record, rank or otherwise purport to “document” any fighter with an obvious ring name: such as “siriporn sor siriporn”.
"Siriporn sor siriporn" s handlers/exploiters are making fools of sincere boxing reporters, and record keepers by fighting her under various ring names out of a Thai prison.
I still haven not forgotten the deplorable "early release" promised to "Siriporn" on the condtion that IF she won the fight against Nanoko Kikuchi.
If she merits release, then relase her-whether she wins or loses a fight results shopuld not control. Its is irrelevant.
For the record, ,"siriporn's first name is actually "Wannee" NOT "siriporn". Unfortunately I have forgotten her last name.(lost somwhere in my hard drive) But, when i find it again, I'll post it here for the benefit of WBAN, WIBA, boxrec.com, and other responsible orgs who want to maintian integrity in female boxing.
I will also be happy to help any org or website that wishes to verify a Thai fighter, or Japanese fighter true identity and passport name.
Bear in mind can be very embarrassing, and damaging to ones credibility when they carelessly and nonchalantly accept or record fighters by ring names.
For instance, I remember many years ago, a well known female boxing org had "Sugar Miyuki" ranked # 1, and Miyuki Nojima ranked a few spots below her. LOL!
When i emailed the org
representative, and asked why he had the same women ranked twice in the same wt class under two different names, he replied facetiously "well actually she fights better when she goes by "Sugar Miyuki" haha. Funny, but his embarrassment must have been acute-two days later Ms Nojima was ranked only once: under the name "Sugar Miyuki"
But, that illustrates the point. this is not an abstract problem.
Finally, if anyone can help me uncover another mystery/fraud:
below, is a picture of a fighter who easily kod one of my friends in Phuket, Thailand on March 10, 2006.
My friend, pictured on the left, is one of the USA’s finest Muay Thai fighters, but she was totally overwhelmed by this physically very powerful and somewhat larger person.
I have been unable to ascertain the real name (or gender LOL!) from either the promoter, the Thai press, or anyone in attendance at this fight. and incredibly, my friend has no clue whom she was fighting-after travelling halfway round the world.
Her opponent is the one wearing the bluish the teeshirt (right)
also wearing the wrist watch.
this was a fight which should not have been sanctioned for many obvious reasons. imho.
If anyone knows the real passport name of this person,
who used the ring name “Saep Wor Por Sukhothai”
Please let me know.
Yours for honest record keeping and fraud prevention,
dan cucich
