WBC want 2 judges
WALTER ALIBEY Wednesday, December 6 2006
BOXING promoter and match-maker Boxu Potts is questioning the legitamacy of a demand by one of the sanctioning bodies, the World Boxing Council (WBC), to have two judges and a referee for the record seven-world-title encounter between Giselle Salandy and American Marium Brakache on Saturday at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex.
The judges and referee are from neighbouring Puerto Rico, but in a release distributed yesterday, Potts revealed the demands are against the laws of the sport.
He stressed further, that president of the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board Melchoir Taylor, who has full autonomy over the fight chose an official from Caracas, one from Puerto Rico and the other from Trinidad and Tobago, which is an expression of total fairness and transparency.
Popular boxing referee Tommy Thomas will once again be the third man in the ring on Saturday, and Potts feels he will have very little to do. In the meantime, however, Salandy says she wants to be judge and referee by knocking out her opponent early.
According to the boxing promoter and match-maker, the final decision rests in the hands of the comissioner Taylor.
In the meantime the six other sanctioning bodies, the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Empire (WBE), International Women’s Boxing Federation (IWBF), North American Boxing Council (NABC), International Female Boxing Association (IFBA) and the International Boxing Association (IBA) have dismissed the demands by the WBC.
According to Potts, the bodies all agreed that no one is expected to tell the commissioner what should be done for fights.
Potts also threatened to take legal action against the WBC should it consider pulling out of the fight.
This situation comes only a day after the initial contest between Salandy and another American Lisa Holewyne was called off because of the late withdrawal of Holewyne on Monday.
Potts is claiming that Holewyne is afraid of Salandy after seeing a tape of her recently.
And yesterday Potts revealed further that Brakache hinted a reluctance to place her belt on the line.
The Morocco-born boxer is the holder of the International Boxing Association (IBA) belt and has a record of four wins, one by knockout, one draw and four defeats.
She is considered a tough fighter for the talented Salandy, but feels the young Trinidadian has the ability to walk away with the several super-middleweight titles come Saturday.
Potts is also claiming that Salandy is scaring away opponentss with her spate of recent successes.
“Whenever the name Giselle Salandy comes up in the super-middleweight division the average fighters, either want to price themselves out of the equation or promoters prefer she comes into their backyard where decisions will not be fair.” Potts said.
