Opponent switch for Salandy

Not for the first time, Trinidad and Tobago's female boxing champion Jizelle Salandy will have to deal with a last-minute switch in opponent.
Instead of Texan Lisa Holewyne, Salandy will now match her skills against US national but Morocco born Marium Brakache in a 10-round championship fight that will place seven titles up for grabs on December 9 at the Jean Pierre Complex.
The 32-year-old Brakache is the IBC champion for the super welterweight division and sports a record of four wins, four losses and one draw. Brakache became the new opponent for the main bout after Holewyne failed to board her flight from Houston, Texas yesterday.
A visibly annoyed promoter, Boxu Potts was not impressed by Holewyne's eleventh hour pullout and took the opportunity to make his charge appear even more intimidating.
"She (Holewyne) has backed out of the fight," he stated. " She is running scared of Jizelle (Salandy). I paid for her ticket and she was a no-show and I will be no longer conducting business with her. I will be seeking a suspension for her."
According to Potts, Brakache is said to be a slugger and is likely to attempt to move Salandy away from her boxing strengths and engage and entice the T&T boxer into a brawl.
"This is a tougher opponent than we wanted for Jizelle at this stage of her career," Potts explained, "This will probably be the toughest fight of her career but we have to deal with it . Brakache is an immovable object and Jizelle gives strong resistance so something has gotta give. And I know who is gonna give because my fighter will be the winner."
Asked how the change of opponent would affect her game plan, Salandy said: "I'll fight anybody, anywhere at anytime. It doesn't matter to me. We will be working towards being prepared for the fight," she said before adding that she had become accustomed to these changes in opponents at the death.
Besides the 10-round main bout, the under-card will feature T&T's Kevin Placide and Allan Azore going up against David Alleyne and Troy Lewis of Guyana in two six-round matches in the super welterweight and welterweight divisions respectively.
And Potts is yet to detemine a Venezuelan opponent for American boxer Perry Valore, who possesses an 18-1 record.
But back to the main draw, Potts added that if Salandy were to win easily against Brakache, a fight with the IBA, WIBA, IWBF super middleweight champion Laila Ali will be on the cards "sooner than later".
