TRINIDAD and Tobago’s double world female boxing champion Giselle Salandy is in the final stages of preparation for Saturday’s mega-fight against American Lisa Holewyn.
At stake will be seven world-title belts and officials of the Guinness Book of World Records are taking a keen interest in the outcome.
To complete her training for the ten-rounder at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo, the 19-year-old Salandy has been involved in intense sparring sessions with former world rated boxer Ulric Johnson and Kevin Placide.
Most of her training has been undertaken at the Roy Jones Boxing Gym, Independence Square East, Port-of-Spain.
Boxing promoter and international match maker Boxu Potts said yesterday that by Wednesday Salandy will be fit and ready for the long-awaited bout.
The Siparia lass was originally scheduled to fight Lisa Holewyn for the WBA and WBC championships in September but Holewyn pulled out days before the bout claiming she was injured.
Two five-round sparring sessions with Johnson and Placide and Learie Bruce will officially end her training today.
Potts said Salandy will participate in two technical sessions on ways to counteract Holewyn’s style of boxing.
“We have realised two weaknesses in Holewyne’s boxing style and we intend to go after them with an aim to end the fight early,” Potts said.
He noted also that they are not expecting any favours from the referee and judges, and therefore are focusing on going all-out to knock out Holewyn and win in a decisive manner.
The fight is carded for the outside court of the Jean Pierre Complex with a number of international fights making up the undercard.
Main fight on the undercard is between Placide and American Andrew Allen who has been unbeaten in six fights to date.
According to Potts, Allen is also fresh from winning two hard-fought bouts in Indonesia and Australia respectively and should serve as a tough challenge for Placide.
Trinidad and Tobago based Guyanese fighter Iwan Azore will also have a date with a Venezuelan fighter who is yet to be confirmed.
Another world title prospect, American Perry Valor will also make his debut in the local ring and will come up against either a fighter from Santo Domingo or Panama.
Potts said Valor has an impressive record of 18 victories and one loss. Valor is one of many boxers internationally who has his assistance as a promoter and match-maker.
Potts, head of Unified Promoters said there are many boxers such as heavyweight Kertson Manswell, Kirt Sinnette, Ria Ramnarine and trainer/manager Bharat Ramoutar who are in need of help.
He said he is willing to do whatever he can to advance their careers but they need to approach him with the request.
Potts, who wants to walk in the footsteps of American boxing promoter Don King, has urged all local boxers and coaches who are in need of help to put their differences aside and talk to him.
“My assistance is for all fighters, even Ramnarine, once she puts aside the pettiness and come to me,” Potts said.
