Trainers impressed with Salandy’s ‘prep’

HANDLERS of double world female boxing champion Giselle Salandy are pleased with her progress in training ahead of her big showdown with American Lisa Holewyne.
The World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council junior welterweight title-holder faces Holewyn on December 9 in a ten-round contest tentatively scheduled for the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.
“With less than 20 days to go we are satisfied with Salandy’s training which is on schedule,” her camp stated in a media release.
In an impressive show of stamina Salandy covered an undulating six-mile course on the Blanchisseuse Road in East Trinidad earlier this week.
The two high-points of the run were a six-minute mile and another over eight minutes uphill. After, the 19-year-old boxing prodigy did some gym-work shadow boxing.
“She immediately had a good breakfast of low carbohydrates and high protein. After her intense training she rested then prepared herself for church,” the release stated.
Salandy’s promoter, Boxu Potts of Unified Boxing Promoters, said he had employed his “spies” in Texas, USA to watch Holewyn.
Potts, an international match-maker said he was told that Holewyne is training “like she is possessed.”
“Holewyn is doing all of the right types of rigorous training. She has at least three sparring partners to work with and is doing really well.
“That being said, we have identified her weak points and are developing the technique to exploit those weaknesses,” said Potts.
Salandy said she would ensure the fight does not go to the score card and is supremely confident of putting her opponent on the canvas before the ten-round limit.
“I’ll be the judge and jury of this fight. This is youth versus experience. I’m going to give Holewyne a boxing lesson and knock her out before the eighth rounds. Eighth will be too late,” she said.
The contest will be of international interest as seven belts will be at stake, for the first time in the history of male or female boxing.
The championships at stake are: WBA, WBC, North American Boxing Conference (NABC), World Boxing Empire (WBE), International Women’s Boxing Federation (IWBF), International Women’s Boxing Association (IWBA) and the IFBA (International Female Boxing Association).
Potts said yesterday he had applied to the Guinness Book of World Records to have the bout entered in their internationally recognised publication.
“They are very interested and are currently doing their research. They are also interested in sending a couple of their officials to monitor the bout for its entry into the prestigious Guinness Book,” said Potts. He said Salandy, undefeated in her professional career, is angling for a clash with Laila Ali, the legendary daughter of heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali.
Apart from the supervision of former world rated boxer Aldric Johnson, her camp has also secured the expertise of Kelvin Placide a former national champion who will be her primary sparring partner.
“In order to get her up to top shape with her strength conditioning and technique we will be employing only male sparring partners,” said Potts
