Jizelle Salandy will step into the ring at Skinner Park on Friday determined to bring glory to T&T in becoming the first Caribbean boxer, male or female, to unite a WBC/WBA title - the junior middleweight.
She will also get the largest purse of any woman boxer in the region -US$7,500 (T&T$47,250 approximately) win or lose.
The titles, the most prestigious in the sport, are sought by the best boxers. To keep them desirable, the WBC and the WBA have decided they will not devalue or debase their titles by allowing them to be on the line for less than US$7,500 to the winner and US$5,000 to the loser.
This bout will mean to boxing in this country what Brian Lara’s record—breaking performances mean to cricket, Ato Boldon and Hasley Crawford’s feats mean to track and field and Dwight Yorke to football.
They all have meant a great deal to sportsmen and even to the citizens who have no sporting inclination or interest.
Salandy is attempting to breathe new life into boxing, which is undergoing lean times.
The fight will be under the rules of the TTBBC.
Though the WBC authorities wanted to have the final say on referee and judges, the local board insisted that Tommy Thomas, T&T’s most experienced referee, would take charge of the fight. Thomas has officiated at world championships in many parts of the world.
Gee, I wonder why?
That position is also a very sought after one by most officials and the fee for his service is determined by the WBC/WBA.
The budget for this promotion is just about T&T $300,000,which goes as set out here:
nSalandy US$ 7,500 Lisa Holewyne US$5,000
nReferee Tommy Thomas US$750
nJudge George St. Aude US$500
nJudge Trevor Arno US$500
nSupervisors Shivana Inalsingh US$500 and George Martinez US$500.
