RIA RAMNARINE defends her Women's International Boxing Association) mini-flyweight (105lbs) world title when she takes on Stephanie George of Guyana on July 14 at the Chaguanas Indoor Sports Arena, Saith Park, Chaguanas.
The fight is Ramnarine's first defence of the world title which she won just under a year ago from American Yvonne Caples at the Jean Pierre Complex, Port of Spain.
Ramnarine, the more experienced fighter, has won nine of her 13 bouts, with four losses, and has also been successful in her last four fights.
She has not lost since four years ago when dropping an eight-round decision to another Guyanese, Shondell Thomas.
Challenger George is no stranger to Trinidad and Tobago, having fought and lost a close four-round unanimous decision to unranked local fighter Vicki Boodram last September at the Jean Pierre Complex.
The match was a repeat of a meeting two years earlier which the Guyanese won.
Ramnarine and her challenger have two opponents in common-Boodram, whom Ramnarine defeated three years ago by a six-round unanimous decision, and American Leona Brown.
Five years ago, Brown kayoed T&T's Ramnarine in New York and also won a ten-round unanimous decision over George two years ago for the vacant WIBC bantamweight title in New York.
George, who like Ramnarine is 28 years old, has lost half of her ten fights, including consecutive defeats in her last three trips to the ring to Leona Brown, Lisa "Bad News" Brown, and T&T's Boodram.
At yesterday's launch of her world title defence, Ramnarine said she was prepared for the fight and has been sparring with male fighters as part of her build-up.
"I've been doing everything I'm supposed to," Ramnarine said. "I have been working on my power and am very prepared."
It was reported that her opponent George has been preparing for the last two months for this fight.
Both pugilists are listed officially at 5ft 2inches and are evenly matched physically.
George, who campaigns mainly as a bantamweight (112-118lbs), will be coming down in weight for the fight.
Ramnarine said fighters come in all sizes and she is not afraid of fighting a naturally bigger woman.
At the launch, Sherry Persad, of Ma Pau Members Club, announced that they will sponsor the world title fight to the tune of $20,000.
Persad said they were honoured to be Ramnarine's main sponsor and wished her well in her title defence.
"Ria is the first female to attain a world title in Trinidad and Tobago. We at Ma Pau firmly believe in support for one's community. Ria Ramnarine is a true exemplar of excellent sportsmanship, perseverance and dedication," said Persad.
"We are gratified to have supported her in the past and are delighted to stand by her again. We will be supporting Ria with $20,000 towards this event."
