The waiting game is once again over for Carina Moreno.
The Watsonville pro boxer has secured a fight with Marianne Chubirka for the North American Boxing Federation junior flyweight title 108 pounds at the Palace Casino in Lemoore on July 20.
Chubirka is currently ranked No. 9 by the International Female Boxing Association at 108 pounds. Moreno, 24, is ranked No. 1 by the IFBA and No. 2 by the Women's International Boxing Association at 108 pounds, and No. 3 by the World Boxing Council at 105 pounds.
"This is a perfect bout right now," said Moreno's manager and trainer Rick Noble. "The fact that it's a North American title and against a tough girl."
Moreno 8-1 is coming off the first loss of her pro career, a split decision to Wendy Rodriguez in January for the vacant WIBA Flyweight title. The defeat, which came after a controversial head-butt call that stopped the fight in Kinder, La., was hard for Moreno to swallow. But Noble said that's all forgotten now.
"She's over it and she's ready to go," he said. "She's not the kind of person to give up. She's working hard as ever."
Chubirka 3-3 is coming off back-to-back losses, albeit to IFBA Light Flyweight champion Ju Hee Kim of Korea and WIBF Intercontinental champion Julia Sahin of Germany. Chubirka, 40, is no youngster. Still, Noble thinks it will be a tough fight. He has his fighter sparring twice a week and will pick up the pace soon.
"Chubirka is not going to be a pushover," said Noble.
The waits between fights for Moreno have often been long. She hasn't fought since facing Rodriguez and hadn't fought for over a year before that.
Noble hopes this bout will lead to a WBC title shot against Nanako Kikuchi 7-1-1 of Japan.
"We expect Moreno to win," Noble said of the Chubirka fight, "but it's going to be a tough bout."
