The next Riot at the Monterey Conference Center will have a decidedly female presence, with two women's bouts on the six-fight card.
The July 8 show at Portola Plaza Hotel, headlined by Salinas junior welterweight Jesus "Chuy" Rodriguez, begins at 7:30 p.m. and is expected to be the 21st consecutive sell-out for promoter Jerry Hoffman. Tickets ($85, $65 and $40) may be reserved in advanced by calling 688-1604.
Hoffman announced Friday that he has signed Portland, Ore., boxer Jenny Houts, 1-0, as an opponent for former amateur sensation Dyana Ornelez, who will be making her pro debut. Ornelez won national championships in the Junior Olympics and Junior Golden Gloves, as well as the California Golden Gloves and Silver Gloves crowns. She took two years off from the sport after the birth of her son, Manuel, now 18 months old.
The contract weight for the four-round bout -- 134 pounds -- will be a compromise for both fighters. Houts normally fights at 140, while Ornelez is a natural 130-pounder.
In the other women's clash is a six-rounder at 116 pounds between rising star Kaleisha West, 3-0, and Maria Contreras, whose 1-4 record has been built against some of the better fighters in the division. Contreras is a stablemate in Houston of junior lightweight sensation Rocky Juarez, who recently lost a controversial world title fight to Marco Antonio Barrera.
The eight-round main event matches Rodriguez, 8-2, a Garcia Boxing protege, against tough journeyman Sergio De La Torre, 10-8, whose last six opponents had a combined record of 57-9. Last year De La Torre fought to an eight-round draw with Gilbert Venegas, who was 9-1-1, and he beat Arthur Brambila, who had an 8-4 record. His most-recent outing was an eight-round, unanimous decision loss to Mike Alvarado, who was 12-0.
Rodriguez will be trying to bounce back from his seventh-round knockout loss to Russian Vladimir Zykov, 16-0, last month in Irvine.
In other bouts:
• A pair of 260-pound super heavyweights, Keith Spencer and Julius Askew, will collide in a four-round battle of U.S. Navy personnel. Spencer is currently on active duty in Oxnard. Askew is retired after a four-year stint in San Diego. Both are making their pro debuts.
• Gabe Garcia, nephew of former Monterey County boxing legend Georgie "The Hammer" Garcia, will bring a 2-1 pro record from Arizona to meet Imperial Valley's Manuel Delgado, 2-1, in a four-round fight at 134 pounds.
One more bout is expected to be added to the show.
