As expected. www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070113/SPORTS18/701130390Sanders wins middleweight title on a TKO Opponent Nicholas doesn't answer bell for third round January 13, 2007 BY MIKE BRUDENELL FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER Detroit's Mary Jo Sanders withstood the early rushes of Texas fireplug Gina Nicholas to score a quick TKO when her opponent couldn't answer the bell for the third round of their IBA middleweight title fight at the Palace on Friday night. Nicholas suffered an injured right arm, around the elbow, in the first round as she threw her best shots at Sanders, who peppered the muscular Nicholas with counter punches. Advertisement Sanders, who already held three championship belts, reddened Nicholas' face with a steady diet of lefts and rights. Nicholas tried to upset Sanders, daughter of former Lion Charlie Sanders, with her roughhouse tactics. Sanders looked cool, calm and collected as she gave Nicholas a boxing lesson, albeit a fast one. "I think she dislocated the right arm or hurt her bicep," said Sanders (23-0, with 7 KOs), who hopes to fight Laila Ali toward the end of the year. "I saw bruising. I'm not sure if I punched her there." Sanders, who turns 33 today, was happy to add to her title count. "I felt I was wearing her down," said Sanders. "I don't feel sore or anything. Maybe I will later on." Sanders was never intimated by Nicholas' broad shoulders and big arms, she said. "No, you just have to say she's a woman, the same weight as me. "She was huge, but you can't let the intimidation factor get to you."

Sue Fox has a good take on this. I guess Mary Jo does not want to face Holly. What does she call the fight a heavybag workout? I wonder if the fight added to a sweat.

Sanders' goal is to move up to super middleweight for a match with Ali. so i dont think it is in her agenda to move back down to fight at 147 again.

Oh yes and fighting Ali remember Ali is the best runner in boxing she will avoid anybody who has more then a snowballs chance in down town Dallas in August of winning.

Weight has nothing to do with it. Holm came into the ring against Turton at around 155. She can easily handle 160 at her height.
The issue is Fresquez doesn't want to leave Albuquerque and Mallo won't leave Detroit.
The irony is that by "staying home" for practically their entire careers, both Holm and Sanders are virtually unknown outside the Michigan and New Mexico area codes, and that makes a neutral site fight a tough sell.
One of the teams has to show some fortitude and go on the road and for that the fighter gets the bigger share of the purse.
