Salandy ready for 7-title rumble
WALTER ALIBEY Saturday, December 9 2006
CULTURE and Gender Affairs minister Joan Yuille-Williams has intervened and paid the purse for teenage world boxing champion Giselle Salandy.
The minister’s act cleared the way for tonight’s historic encounter between Salandy and Moroccan-born United States citizen Marium Brakache at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.
At the weigh-in ceremony at the Roy Jones Boxing Gym, Independence Square, Port-of-Spain it was reported that Salandy will get US$10,000 while Brakache will earn US$5,000 for their night’s work.
Salandy gives up two and three-quarter pounds after weighing in at 149 pounds to Brakache’s 151 and three quarter pounds for tonight’s feature 10-rounder.
Boxing promoter and international match-maker Boxu Potts commented that said Salandy’s weight is an indication of the tremendous amount of work she has put in and a reflection of her fitness level.
According to Potts, the bout will be the first time any two boxers will compete for more than three world title belts on the same night.
He said the winner will be recorded in sports history books.
Brakache, with a record of four wins and four losses with one knockout is the International Boxing Association (IBA) champion.
She will clash with Salandy, unbeaten in 13 fights, for six other titles conferred by the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC), the World Boxing Empire (WBE), the International Women Boxing Federation (IWBF), the North American Boxing Conference (NABC) and the International Female Boxing Association (IFBA).
Yesterday Salandy told the gathering of media representatives that she will put on a boxing treat for all and asked local fans to come out and support her.
Brakache also requested the support of the public of Trinidad and Tobago and thanked Potts for the opportunity to challenge Salandy for the seven-world title belts.
In the undercard, two fights will be held before the main bout. First Kevin Placide and Ricardo Innis meet in a six-round middleweight scrap. And in the other, a Guyana-born Iwan Azore will match fists with Trinidad and Tobago’s Ian Blue in a four-round bout.
The fight will be preceded by a cultural display as well as performances by several calypsonians.
Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago’s Boxing Board of Control Melchior Taylor also announced that the fight will be totally under the jurisdiction of his board.
