Early Result from Kenya: Janaya Davis 5-2 (1) of the US upset Conjestina Achieng 9-3-3 of Kenya in a points victory for the WIBF-GBU Light Middleweight title. I don't understand how this was a "Light Middleweight" bout if Janaya weighed in at the reported 164ΒΌ lbs. (She has usually fought at middleweight or super middleweight, BTW) www.wban.org/biog/jdavis.htmdescribes her boxing background. She was ranked #1 by USA boxing as a 165-lb amateur. She was ranked as high as #6 at pro super middleweight by WBAN but had been inactive since her two losses to Ijeoma Egbunine. In the same time frame Yvonne Reis, who also beat Achieng in Kenya, was ranked from #11 at super middleweight to #5 at middleweight. It is good to see Janaya back in action, she was a promising (10-1) amateur who started well as a pro, but it's not a big upset for her to have notched the win over Achieng, more like a return to form for her. Of course any win in a foreign land on the other boxer's home turf is a good win, but we had already seen that Achieng could lose a decision in Nairobi, to Yvonne Reis. Janaya was regarded as a good prospect until Egbunine stopped her in February 2005, and I'm glad to see her come back successfully!
