From ringsidesports.net:
The co-main event featured Latino female superstar Mia “Knockout” Rosales St. John against Shelby “girl” Walker. St. John heated up the crowd with a spectacular entrance to the accompaniment of Marizchi Plata, who had earlier provided the Mexican and U.S. national anthems to open the program.
The crowd was obviously on St. John’s side, shouting “Mia … Mia!” The bout began almost evenly, though, as Walker gave as good as she took in the first round. Walker received a winning score in that round, 29-28, but the second round proved St. John’s superiority. Walker received a one-point deduction from referee Ray Scott for throwing St. John to the mat. Unhurt, St, John came up from the mat with a vengeance, staggering Walker. The deduction, and St. John’s aggressive fighting won her the next two rounds, 30-24, 30-24.
The bout belonged to St. John, who showed the skill and form that won her the IFBA women’s lightweight title. Walker went down in the fourth round of the six-round fight, by TKO.
The fans were a factor in St. John’s win, Lopez said. “She said the Hispanic folks here in Nogales gave her the edge. It gives her an energy … she’s very proud of her Hispanic heritage.
“I saw quite a few young females out there, admiring her,” (Joel) Lopez (of Ringside Sports in Phoenix) said. “She’s a great influence on Hispanic females … she talked about empowerment, and Hispanic culture (during her visit to Nogales). She’s a great speaker, a great (role) model, and a great fighter!”
