RIA RAMNARINE, the country’s first female world title boxer is returning to the ring May 24 at the Central Regional Indoor Sporting Complex in Chaguanas.
She will take on Guyana’s Stephanie George in one of five fights being put on by Ticos Boxing Promotions.
The card is part of an on-going development drive by boxing trainer and manager Gordon Hoyte, Fitzroy Richards and others to take the sport to another level locally and internationally.
Among the other fights will be a clash between Kevin Placide ‘The Fighting Policeman” and the talented Floyd Trumpet “The Postman” in a Super welterweight contest.
Placide referred to Trumpet as a chicken, but confirmed that he will have to prepare better for his counterpart, than how he prepared for vicious Guyanese fighter Denny Dalton last month.
Also on the card will be the new World Boxing Empire (WBE) champion Shawn Corbin who is likely to face a fighter from neighbouring Venezuela or Colombia while John Dalton will have a date with Mohammed Dawes and Wendell Jukhu will meet Richard Straker in another big match-up.
The stocky looking Ramnarine told the media she was happy to be back and entering the ring once again.
She cleared the air on her decision to return, saying she never retired from the sport but had given up her world title.
And she later blamed Government’s lack of support for her decision to give up her title.
Ramnarine was seen literally throwing her WIBA mini-flyweight world title belt into a dustbin a year or so ago, and said it was because she was not getting the support to compete at such a level from Government.
Like many others who were at the press briefing, Ramnarine complained that “only one person is being given help in the sport in our twin-island republic.”
Placide told a small gathering that he will modernise his style of fighting in the coming years.
He described Dalton as a type of wild “Tazmanian” type of fighter as suppose to Trumpet who he will have to intensify his training for.
In a virtual war of words between Placide and Trumpet, the latter jokingly said he will not push his counterpart out of the ring like Denny Dalton, but will punch him out, much to the delight of the gathering.
Shawn Corbin who is unaware of his opponent said “I do not know who my opponent will be but whoever it is better be prepared for battle.”
