Laura Serrano's retirement is not unexpected - it is a measure of her love for the sport that she has retired from it three times but came back twice! This time, at age 40 and expecting a baby, I expect she really means it. She fought the best and always fought her best, which was world class from start to finish. From her pro debut against Christy Martin in 1994 to her recent loss to Ina Menzer, she was a class act all the way. She was instrumental in getting the ban on women's pro boxing lifted in Mexico City where she is now a boxing commissioner, but she never fought there professionally herself. Her retirement letter to WBAN is typical of Laura Serrano, thoughtful and gracious. You can read it at www.womenboxing.com/NEWS20082/news040508serranoretires.htm ... and she is totally correct about her "most unfair moment", which was a travesty of biased judging. In a sport with its share of pretenders who often talk more than they walk, Laura was indeed a true champion who walked the true walk for 14 years. Her footsteps will be a good, but rugged, trail for other female boxers to follow ... www.wban.org/biog/lserrano.htm

I am surprised she never fought in mexico..thats kinda weird and kinda good because she didn't get the home town advantage. Also i think she is retiring because she is having a kid. The sport will miss her though..wow alot of people have retired this year.

She was instrumental in getting the ban on women's pro boxing lifted in Mexico City where she is now a boxing commissioner, but she never fought there professionally herself. I am surprised she never fought in mexico..thats kinda weird and kinda good because she didn't get the home town advantage. I didn't say she never fought anywhere in Mexico, the "there" in my sentence was "Mexico CITY". She did fight once in Tijuana (Maria de las Nieves Garcia) and once in Ciudad Juarez (both just over the border and the latter not far from her opponent Gloria Ramirez's home in the US). She was also once scheduled to fight in Mexico City, but it fell through at the last moment. To quote from my bio page for Laura: "In March 1998, WBC President Jose Sulaiman thought he had persuaded the México City Sports Commission to allow Laura to fight Isra Girgrah on the undercard of a super lightweight bout between Julio Cesar Chavez and Miguel Gonzalez. This match was scuttled a few days before fight night when the México City authorities exhumed a 1947 law forbidding women to fight professionally. (A match between Christy Martin and Daniëlla Somers was also scratched from this same card.) ... Whistles filled the Plaza México bullring as round-card girls pranced in miniskirts and high heels. On this night of bloodied noses and bruised faces, they were the only women on display. Seated in the third row behind promoter Don King, Laura Serrano, México's best female boxer, could only watch in frustration."
"The city officials had ruled that the ban was needed to protect women, specifically their "reproductive organs". Subsequently the Mexican courts agreed with Serrano that the ban violated a 1992 constitutional reform that had proclaimed equality between the sexes. Serrano said the city's law stayed on the books for so long because of outdated attitudes toward women and that the talk of protecting women's health was just an excuse. "I think much of it is because of the macho mentality of the México City boxing authorities," she said, adding "all of this is like a screen to keep women from penetrating this cluster of men."Laura later worked to have that antique law overturned, and it was. The first women's pro fight in México City took place in 1999 - it's written up a little in my bio of Mariana Juarez: "On July 3, 1999 at La Arena México in México City, she (Juarez) faced Ana María Torres on a card that featured the first sanctioned women's professional bouts to be held in México City. Torres won a four-round split (39-37, 39-38, 37-39) decision over Mariana in a 49-kg (jr. flyweight) bout, starting a rivalry that would become one of the better ones in Mexican female boxing. Ana María Torres would often appear in Erik Morales' boxing shows and considers Morales her mentor and advisor, while Mariana Juárez is similarly mentored by Marco Antonio Barrera. Laura Serrano, Mexico's best known female boxer and women's boxing advocate, was on hand to celebrate the breakthrough event."www.womenboxing.com/biog/mjuarez.htmUnfortunately at the time of that change of heart by the authorities in Mexico City Laura had sustained a leg injury and was unable to compete as a pro boxer. (She made her first big pro boxing comeback later that year, taking fights in the US to get back into the game --- and going on to some of her best performances against top American boxers like Alicia Ashley, Tracey Byrd, Melissa Del Valle, Kelsey Jeffries, Chevelle Hallback, JoJo Wyman and Isra Girgrah) But she never got the opportunity to fight in Mexico City, where her own effort and example had done so much to help others participate legally in the sport. A world title fight for Laura in Mexico City could have been a high point for her career, and it's too bad it never came to be. By the time (2005) the WBC decided to sanction women's boxing, which probably would have been the title most valued by Serrano herself, she was not competing regularly, so Jackie Nava (who won the first WBC women's title) may have been the indirect beneficiary of her pioneering effort. Laura came back into the ring in 2006 and tried for other world titles, but this time it was maybe a little too late, even for a great competitor like her. Jeannine Garside beat her handily, and Ina Menzer did enough to get a decision in Germany. Hers is still a great story and she will likely continue to make her presence felt in this sport ...

Some fights sound like their fair but end up a rip off or you getting ripped off but i am not talking about Germany or New Mexico right now but I was checking Wban and I saw (Mary McGee, 135¾, of Gary, stopped Renee Richardt, 134, of Fenton, Missouri, 1:22 seconds of the first of a scheduled six round) Now when ever i see stopped in an amount of seconds you especially me i think this person is either talented or they just got some person to get their behind kicked and in this case i though since Renee had 11 fights and Mary had 13 i though it was fair until i checked Renee's record... Renee had only won against people with 2 or 3 fights and every one that had more than 3 she lost and the fight she lost against where against 2004 and 2003. This is dangerous their setting that kid up to get killed, just think if this kid had to face a real opponent, it would be horrible, but i just think they are probably new and still learning but i hope some one puts some common sense into them.

I decided to make a little column here to talk about thinks and to keep this river of a forum flowing with thoughts, and opinons and since we have a great collection of people its time to wipe the dust from your eyes and start looking and type something well relevant and express yourself. First off i want to say May and June its all about this two great month of action, domination, steals and facial looks. First let me say if this month keeps going on with facial looks we might all need a botox to keep our jaws from falling did you see that Graf's opponent's reaction in the first photo their..hmm and guess who was there too haunting that fight like a ghost of christmas past. I know she has a right to be there but still its kinda weird and even stranger check out this quote from :http://www.womenboxing.com/NEWS20082/news050408graf.htm " When the referee stopped the fight in round 5, after a series of hard punches from Graf, Santos was very displeased with the ref's decision. Graf stated after the fight that she didn't understand why the fight was broken off at that stage." when both the fighter and the opponent agree on something it is unusual thing.oh well Carolina Alverez could have told Graf's last opponent something about bloody noses and blood referee's stopping early however things happen NEXT..(put your opinon about this fight if you saw or not) ______________________________________________________ Staylo is bring the Flo from Florida to Germany in an exciting match up against Ina Menzer. will Staylo bring enough flo to knock Ina lo only time will tell on the 31st of May or will Ina hands of steel peel away at Staylo one thing for sure this is a must see event. (in my opinon Stay lo should train with Sandy T since she did so well against Ina and maybe Staylo could learn a trick or two..maybe but Good Luck stay lo..and Next ______________________________________________________ After a long absence from the sport of boxing, Ria Ramnarine is ready to get back in the ring and start winning fights again. She is expected to fight against Guyana’s Stephanie George in an eight-round mini flyweight contest on May 24. “I am coming back because I know I have a couple good years again. I am confident in myself and I know I can make it back to the top. I am eager to get back in the ring and give good performances so that people could come again to see me fight,” she said. I find pretty cool some of the other occupations she has and still fights check out this link for whole story:http://www.newsday.co.tt/features/0,78280.html ________________________________________________Next...____________________ When you here a name like Little China you usually think of a china doll but for this stare...in this photo?? you can find more information about who she is fighting Also quick question and i want some replys too but have you notice in some photos in tons of galleries Don King is with a female boxer but does he still promote female boxing?? That is very weird i mean he has a game coming out and i wonder does he even advocate female boxing by having female boxers in the game, just an interesting thought...also Dee was talking about on Wban something about Erin McGowan, i will let Dee talk about that one..

I think Mary is a good, quick fighter. I look forward to the fight. I made my way to her hometown the first time, she can come see me in Chicago if she really wants to "finish business". I am not a big talker, and she is, so I am sure she will talk some smack before the fight. I will handle things in the ring if and when the time comes.
I also look forward to the Mia fight since it is supposed to be in Mexico. Hope all works out.

I am not going to over react about her trash talking but she does have a big mouth on her did you see her latest comment, i wonder if she does that for publicity or something or to keep the fight interesting?? kinda like Laila Ali..eh..with that big mouth thing however she is gone but to think of how many people she dodged and jumped over to miss but i guess it not robotic lines like some German fighters. Most of the time when they win they say something about their punches being cleaner, straigher like something off a commercial or something. Also Rita lets talk about Mary comments because there isn't sadly alot of proof that you are fighting Mia. I went to her website even Box Rec and didn't see a date, are you and your group trying to get a fight finalized maybe?

We are trying t get it finalized. Mia does have it on her blog and we have been working with Jill Diamond of the NABF as well as the promoter in Mexico. I am hoping it happens. They came to us with the fight offer and we accepted, but no, nothing is finalized.
About Mary - I have never talked about the last fight other than to say I think she is a good fighter, and it was a good fight. The rematch will be no different - a good test for the both of us. Mary can say anything she wants to. I choose to take the higher road. I don't need to talk nuts to make myself feel better. If she really wanted the fight - she would honor the original contract and do it here n Chicago where the Indiana fans and Chicago fans can enjoy a great fight. All my folks had to travel last time - now it's their turn. That's really all I can say. If she agrees to that - fight on! Mary doesn't have to sit around and wait for me - there are plenty of people that have offered to fight her....who is making excuses?

Yah I found the information you were talking about on Mia's blog and yah you do have a point though, i am suprise though there are alot of fighters in lightweight division and i am suprise none have called at Mary like Jelena, Cindy Serrano,Belinda or Melissa or Jessica Rackocky but i guess we have to wait for Random Ryan's Advised Fights yup those are all ways killer action and unexpected opponents...

Carley Batey vs Sharon Gaines is this week and Jasmin Rivas vs Jackie Nava. I think Carley Batey will beat Sharon Gaines because Gaines has been lossing fights like crazy lately. Adrina Delgado returns to the ring to fight Jennifer Barber? that is interesting..

Mariana Juarez returns the ring to fight against another champion after is stupid and ridiculous because if you have fought in 2007 and not in 2008 you only have the time to just train nothing more and nothing less which puts you at a terrible disposition against the champion which 5 times out of 10 has been active. Well i will just wait for the results..lol
Victoria Milo is retiring after not even have a retirement fight or last fight actual her last fight was in may.
Kendra Lenhart returns to the ring is good because we have a new middle weight fighter and another person to bring home the titles.
