Wallberg v Serrano
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KqxBsEeEaAwww.youtube.com/watch?v=ee_hMAEx910I hope Serrano gets a rematch - this was a close one. This is easily one of those bouts that I wish was 12 rounds instead of 10. Hi-profile championship bouts between experienced, professional female boxers should all be 12 rounds!
---------------------------------------------------
Serrano got ripped off. Yes, it was a homer decision.
I watched the fight, scored it as conservatively as possible and I have to say, Amanda Serrano is a great fighter. Frieda Wallberg was a conservative fighter, but a strong lady.
Amanda made that fight, it was her pressure, her forward combos, her attacks that should have scored points. She landed about 70 body shots on Wallberg, many more jabs, many more hooks.
Wallberg countered more and pushed back, then threw. To her credit, she had sharp counters...but not that many.
In an early rounds, the ref showed his homer colors by warning Amanda for a second low blow in the round 3...but if you freeze the tape, it was a punch moving upward that lands on Wallbergs trunk line, the elastic material that is about 5 stitches high. NOT LOW, IMO.
Here's my raw thoughts and scoring...
#1- Serrano…sets the pace, pops her jab, slaps Wallbergs jelly belly, 10-9 Serrano
#2 Serrano…sets the pace, dictates, works hard body shots. 20-18 Serrano
#3 Serrano…warned for a low blow…that was maginally low…Wallberg counters with jabs but is not doing damage.
2nd warning was for a left uppercut that landed on the belt but pulled up Wallbergs shorts…again, marginal low, looked worse, not really callable. …I would give round 3 to Serrano again for making the fight, landing more and dictating. The low blow calls were very over the top, IMO but lets say a 10-10 round, its now 30-28 Serrano after 3.
To win Wallberg has to win 5 of the next 7 rounds
#4 Same pattern, Serrano dictating, landing good body shots, Wallberg jumping back in with strong counters…Serrano more tired and looping shots, Wallberg sharper on her counters, Wallbergs round , its now 39-38 Serrano after 4
#5 Serrano sets the pace, works Wallberg around the ring, pops her with her right jab-left cross-left hook to the body…wallberg jumps back with strong counters…feels like another Serrano round, she worked more, worked harder but Wallberg had a few punches land but sharper punches. Serrano, 49-47 after 5 rounds. To win Wallberg needs to win 4 out of the next 5.
#6 Tough round to score, Wallberg in center of ring in beginning of round trying to gain control…winning thru first 1/3 of round, then Serrano turns the tables with sharp body shots, good jabs she begins to re-establish the pace and the action, Serrano lands more, Wallberg is slightly sharper, Even round , after 6 its Serrano 59-57
#7 Wallberg retreats, Serrano on her popping combos but fading in speed and power, Wallberg steps back in is sharp with stronger counters, then she takes control of the round and works Serrano backwards, but steps off and lets Serrano gain control back…Serrano sensing a losing round lets a wild right hook fly and just misses, Wallberg cooley steps back in and cracks Serrano.Wallberg pushes with her fore-arm and cracks Serrano. Wallberg looks cool and wins the round. Her corner tells her she won that round as she walks toward it. Its Serrano 68-67 after 7
#8 Great Round…both fighters know the fight is on the line…Serrano starts the same working Wallberg around the ring, Wallberg then counters and tries to take the play away, but Serrano comes back, but again Wallber retreats, crosses her arms, pushes Serrano and then cracks her. No effect on Amanda, she whips back with wide body shots…very close round, a tie. Its Serrano 78-77 after 8.
#9 Wallberg stands firm in center of ring, Serrano seems tired at beginning of round. Wallberg counters more trying to take control, Serrano refuses to jump inside and invites Wallber to control the action. Wallberg does and snaps sharp punches thru the middle of round. Serrano is wilder and throws from the outside. Wallbergs rounds, its tied after 9, 87-87. The winner of the 10th round takes the fight…
#10 Serrano jumps out strong and works Wallberg backwards. Serrano sets the pace and Wallberg again crosses her arms and pushes Serrano back, then tries to counter…she is landing fewer of those counters as the Energy is with Serrano 1/3 of the way thru the 10th and she has outlanded Wallberg by 2 to 1 so far…Wallberg lands 2 hard counters and jumps toward Serrano, again, arms crossed and then pushing and then throwing sharp counters…not super hard but effective. The tide may be turning at the mid-point…Wallberg pushes forward and throws a sharp counter, Serrano whips back a body shot, Wallberg backs off like she has thru out the fight. Serrano takes the play back and SHE is the one throwing body shots, uppercuts and slashing right hooks at the bell. Serrano’s round, Serrano’s fight, 97-96…she made the fight, she worked more, she landed more, she moved Wallberg around the ring. Wallbergs fight was odd, defensive—she waded back, pushed Serrano and cracked her with a counter but never really put a combo on Serrano. Wallberg looked like she could have gone 5 more rounds, Serrano looked more tired, but she did 65% of the work, IMO.

Amanda Serrano, take a bow. You went to HOMERVILLE and put a whacking-cracking on Wallberg. You know you won the fight because you made the fight, you landed more, you set the pace and controlled the action. Nice Fight! You are great to watch. A few little things here and there and that jelly belly target of Wallbergs would have been folded like a wal-mart lawn chair! But again, take a bow- YOU WON!
Wallberg would never have the stones to come to America to fight you, but you had that guts to go there and whoop on her!
