Today Marcela Acuña announced her retirement from boxing, saying that it was time for her to turn to a political career in the Chamber of Deputies in support of the government of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. Marcela's pro boxing career began in 1997 with losses to Christy Martin in her pro debut and Lucia Rijker in her second pro match, alongside a struggle to make ends meet in her home country which did not at the time sanction women's pro boxing. She went on to become a national sports heroine and popular media figure. Argentina has become a hotbed of women's pro boxing with possibly the most rapid growth of fan interest in the sport anywhere in the world over the last few years. The current enthusiasm for the sport in Argentina is in many ways the legacy of Marcela Acuña's pioneering efforts, persistence, and personality in and out of the ring. In an interview she declined to name who she sees as her potential successor in Argentinian women's boxing, saying "There are many successors, in total in the country there are eight world champions. I consider myself as the mother of them and I do not choose one of my daughters. I leave a legacy that is the women's boxing in our country." www.elonce.com/secciones/deportivas/207938-la-tigresa-marcela-acua-anunci-su-retiro-del-boxeo.htmTo read about Marcela's career, you can go to www.wban.org/biog/macuna.htm
