Secretary of the T&T Boxing Board of Control Brian Lewis said the local body will be reviewing last Friday’s bout between T&T’s Ria Ramnarine and Venezuelan Ana Fernandez which took place at the Central Regional Indoor Sport Arena.
Ramnarine won the fight by a split decision after two of the three judges T&T’s George St Aude 87-86 and Guyana’s Eion Jardine 87-85 scored in her favour, while Canada based Trevor Arno scored it for Fernandez 87-85. The decision was seen as very controversial by many of the fans, who turned out to give support to the hometown girl Ramnarine, who claimed the World Boxing Association (WBA) Interim and World Boxing Council (WBC) Cabofe titles. “It’s part of the new executive’s mandate to review any bout that we sanction, and the same will be done to this one. “Once there are issues that need to be addressed, we will pay attention and ensure steps are taken to improve in the future”, said Lewis.
Lewis said contentious and controversial decisions are all part of professional boxing, and the sport in T&T is not excluded. “There is the need for improvement in the area of officials, referees and judges, being two of the main categories, and we have made provision for this with plans to host workshops and seminars”. He indicated that any concerns with the officials, will have to be dealt with by the WBA and the WBC, since it was these two governing bodies that recommended the officials for the bout.
He added that while there are concerns about the decision, nothing should be taken away from the fighters, whom he felt put on a good show for the packed arena. “Ria Ramnarine did her part in the ring, she showed a lot of courage and character, in her attempt to carry the T&T flag”. The boxing board’s secretary feels that Ramnarine should also review the fight and take out the positives, and ensure that she learns from the experience, which would help her in the future
