I just listened to the Lucia interview prior to the last NMexico fight.
Lucia is the ONLY class act with a REAL resume that could possibly make a great women's boxing promoter! She totally gets it.
Unfortunately, there are NOT many women's boxers with TV-Q outside of the very limited local market they fight in, except for a few Canadian and Mexican fighters.
Consider the fact that Braekhus' Holm Call out video was viewed by MORE people than watched Holm's last 3 fights LIVE!!!!! That's amazing-- a Scandanavian call video, posted to YOU TUBE introduced MORE worldwide fight fans to who HOLLY HOLM is than her promoter has managed to do in Holly's last 3 AT HOME fights.
Now I get it, Holm is making a good living fighting at Home and that's OK...but it does NOTHING to advance the sport on the world stage, or even on the SouthWest USA stage or even on the Arizona or the Texas stages.
I suggest that Ms. Braekhus find an opponent who knows how to drive or board an jet because HH ain't leaving HOME...and fighting for peanuts in NM does nothing to advance the sport as NO ONE will see the fight.
Ms. Braekhus do the math...HH fights in front of about 2500 fans at about a guesstimated ave. of $75/each, about a 180K take...the promoter likely taking more than the lion's share leaving say 60K to pay 12 fighters for 6 bouts...with HH taking the lion's share of that, leaving say 30K to pay 11 fighters...about an ave. of $2700/fighter...how dismal is that? You train 2 months to fight for $1300/month...no wonder Mathis expressed unahppiness at her purse...the economics of the LOCAL FIGHTER DRAW means everyone else eats very little, making it very difficult to make a full time living fighting, making the sport shrink NOT expand.
The model that works is UFC...not that UFC top draw fighters are anywhere near a Mayweather, but the pay pyrmaid is wider at the top for UFC fighters than boxing's pay pyramid. And that means the UFC will grow much faster as more warriors are drawn to it because they can ALL make more.
Manny is known around the world, Holly is known around New Mexico.
Manny makes millions, Holly thousands per major title bout...does anyone get the fact that women's boxing is dying not growing? Local fighters will come and go, but no one will know who they were and why they were worth talking about.
