People go round and round over what makes the sport better and they always ignore the GREEN ELEPHANT- Purses!
That's right, you can add up all the titles and throw them away for a better purse almost any day.
So how can a TITLE by a typical sanctioning body become a VALUE to a boxer?
My vote,
1. 6 month manditory is always offered to the number 1 ranked challenger. IF that challenger refuses, for any reason, they lose their ranking 5 notchs. This builds challenger "playoff" fights to go after the title. Of course the #2 ranked challenger gets the fight if #1 refuses.
2. 6 month manditory title defense requires promoter to offer a victory bonus of 25 % of the total purses he pays. IE. #1 ranked fighter gets 6,000 , champion gets 10,000 ( total purse is 16,000), promoter puts up $4000 victory bonus.
There is NO DOUBT that a victory bonus system will create better fights and more of them.
The rest of the hogwash that sanctioning orgainizations bat around are pretty much worthless and not worth talking about as they seem more politically driven than anything else IE. the president of abc likes fighter xyz or thinks he/she can make more money with fighter with xyz via sanctioning fees so he/she ranks him/her higher. This actually sends the sport backward at a much faster rate.
Bernies directive: Sanctioning bodies should sanction---NO, first they should get a CLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A six month rule (with exceptions such as a verified injury in training to either fighter with a rescheduled bout as soon as possible). Another option: two manditory defenses a year with other optional defenses by champion or two manditory defenses and optional bouts against opponents in other weight classes.

The real reason they are requiring the 6 month mandatory is simply to raise revenue by collecting more sanctioning fees. Its really a no-brainer. BD

So if a fighter does not have a promoter wanting to pay for a title defense they should be stripped in 6 months , The NABF is only trying to make money off the deal like Dobbs said ! The only oen I ever heard of sanctioning a fight for no or little money is Ryan with that 4-0 girl in the Philippines so he can make Sarah think she missing up for not fighting for his title !!!!

That rule cannot be enforced. Lucia Rijker, great as she is, created a 140 pound logjam by being allowed to remain the #1 contender to Sumya Anani for an eternity. Lucia was permitted to hold on to the #1 ranking yet wasn't obligated to fight Sumya, who was eager to defend against her. This was unfair not only to Anani, but the the ladies ranked behind Rijker, as well as the fans. The situation is hurting women's boxing. Someway, somehow, the champ has to defend against #1 at some point. That is a basic rule that doesn't exist in women's boxing, and as Stacy said, the promoter is needed to be willing to promote these bouts. If they don't, the powers that be need to think outside the box in order to get these fights to happen.

Agreed, sanctioning bodies, except for Ryan, are looking to make sanctioning fees and get ringside seats and expenses.
SO, they are NOT adding to the sport, just giving promoters a LEVER to get ladies in the ring for less money- "camon, sign the contract, you want to fight for a title don't you?".
"Yeah, but do I get to keep the peanuts?"- heard this from a fighter.
I think Christy and Lucia proved that titles in women's boxing are worthless. They never "lusted" after a sanctioned title.
And any sanctioning body will quickly smoke out a weak promoter IF they were to say, "Our title requires you to offer a victory bonus"...however, IF a promoter started doing that, their would actually be competition to fight on his card. And THAT kind of competition might give the sport a boost as women would be in line to get on promoter xyz's next card.
Oscar is offering knockout bonus money on some of his cards. And it has turned those cards into knockout fests. Fighters are going after it like mad men.
Anybody have any thoughts as to what is really working right now in terms of building the sport? Don't say the amateurs...people have been saying that for 9 years.

TD, I wasn't aware of Oscar doing that. Thanks for pointing it out. Oscar's thinking outside of the bun!
