Remember the epic 1996 battle between Christy Martin and Deirdre Gogarty? Gogarty has written a book about her life and times in the ring and I spotted an extract here: www.boxingnewsonline.net/view-Article.asp?ArticleID=1279If you didn't see the fight back then, here's a highlights clip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFrd2oIZcjE. I believe the contest is considered one of the best in the history of women's boxing. For my first post I'm happy to recall/introduce it. Nice to meet everybody, by the way

Deirdre made a huge contribution to interest in women's boxing in the USA and since she retired from competition she has continued to contribute to the sport in many ways. Her gutsy performance in that fight helped to make Christy Martin famous to a broader boxing public. I feel she deserved more credit than she got at the time for putting the sport of women's boxing on so many peoples' radar. There's an (old) bio of Deirdre on WBAN at www.wban.org/biog/dgogarty.htmThanks for posting these updates about her, Paul.

Deirdre made a huge contribution to interest in women's boxing in the USA Thanks for posting these updates about her, Paul. You're welcome, Dee. I remember an article in Time magazine about the Gogarty-Martin fight that really brought women's boxing to my attention. It featured an action shot of the bout that captured the raw courage of both women as they tore into each other, with Martin's vest blood-speckled from her damaged nose. That report and image caused me to re-assess my attitude towards women's boxing.
