Rivas changes weight class

This decision was announced by Boxu Potts, Special Adviser, Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board following two consecutive defeats by Rivas. Potts said his fighter, who agreed to his proposal that she shift classes, has finished on the losing end although she had been well in the lead after the fifth rounds in both bouts.
“I have since sat down with the fighter and agreed that she will fight in the Super Welterweight division, which is the class that the deceased Giselle Salandy dominated. Rivas has also agreed to fight in a lower weight class,” Potts said in a release yesterday.
Apart from changing weight divisions, Potts also wants Rivas to spend more time in TT where more conditioning work can take place.
“I need to be directly involved in her conditioning so I have suggested that she spends more time in Trinidad and Tobago to do some strength training and conditioning with our local track and field team, where there is a great deal of expertise. She will also be evaluated through the Verne Gambetta course which Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport Ashwin Creed has been an advocate of.”
Rivas will re-enter the ring at the end of this month for the WBC International fight. During that bout she will be monitored before consideration is given for her to compete for the WBC and WBA titles at the end of February in that division.
The local boxer will also be made to undergo a comprehensive blood evaluation programme to ensure that her metabolism functions well. He believes Rivas has the ability to become a great fighter as Salandy was.
“With my sport science, strength training and technical teams I will leave no stone unturned in her development,” Potts declared.
