This is good news for boxing in general and possibly good news for women's boxing.
HBO boxing has been the worst spectacle on Cable. They made lame fights and then commented during the fight about how lame the fight was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Showtime has been eating their lunch for years.
If I can't sleep, and HBO has a card--I'll watch that and bingo- asleep by round 4.
Hearing that HBO was moving into promoter roles was the final kiss of BOREDOM.
Then when the PacMan jumped ship, they lost the only solid fighter that gave them reliable audiences.
Toodaloo Greenburg, get a job in the towel room.
Maybe, just maybe, they hire someone who loves the sport, not despises it. Oh, yeah, when I hear the touts for 24/7 Joe blo vs. Jon blos, it makes me laugh...those were the worst moments of PROMO-MENTARIES I have ever seen.
If I were HBO, I would hire Lucia Rijker as special matchmaker/advisor...that lady should be the face of women's boxing because she certainly has all of the soul that women's boxing ever had.

TD Lucia Rijker as a matchmaker and advisor , is very interesting idea, I might steal that idea from you lol but I hardly doubt that HBO will do that but it would be interesting to see if that happens or if they have a female match again.

Jason-- HBO spends between 35M and 60M ( depends on who you ask) on BOXING PURSES...and they walked away with 2 black eyes. Reason, Greenburg disliked boxing. Lucia was just for female bouts...but the more I think about it, she could be HBO's matchmaker period. Max Kellerman knows boxing and loves the sport...his stock could rise. And Harold Lederman may be the best judge to ever watch a fight. I'd like to hear more from him. Of course Roy Jones knows the sport better than all of them and is getting smoother on the microphone. HBO has to do something, they have the best drama-comedies on TV and get a C - for their men's boxing. For women's boxing they get a 0. I remember when Lucia would be a prelim but not the make the cablecast...of course she totally demolished everyone, it was like SuperWoman VS Pee Wee Herman. Anyway, this could be an opening for women. What about Menzer VS Garside #2---that is HBO worthy. And Nava VS Torres #2---that's an HBO fight...you get a smooth good looking fight enthusiast like Lucia talking up those 2 bouts and you will get fight fans back to BAD ( boxing after dark). TD

TD I don't think any women in America except for Germany has been paid in the millions but Universum is back and I hardly think they will have Ina return to fight Garside, they may not fight her at all, we will have to wait and see in August. Nava vs Torres was a good fight but Torres isn't a superbantamweight and Nava isn't a bantamweight, I would rather see Nava take on Ada Velez or Melinda cooper then for Torres I would rather her fight Nadia Hokmi or Hagar finer or K West.

Jason-- your missing the point, the GATE IS OPEN at HBO, only certain horses can get thru that gate and only for a certain amount of time.
Now, who you would like to see fight is one thing, but who HBO would put on the cable is quite another...now is the time for Lucia to become a promoter and put together a card of female's best fighters, evenly matched in a DIAMOND CAST QUALITY CARD.
We're talking the top 4 fights in women's boxing who would actually fight, not run around. Women who throw hard, all out and are FIGHTERS, not track stars.
I gave you my top 2. Name yours.
Furhter, Lucia as a promoter is pure dynamite...the lady is on camera talent, in the ring talent and knows female fighters better than anyone alive today. My money is on her to finally MAKE women's boxing into a real fan sport, with real purses. Not those VAMPIRE $200/Round dogfood purses.

TD The problem with most industries in America is that they run themselves into the wall and don't know when to stop and start over or change something. For Lucia to have the title promoter, she would have to put her money up front, I agree with her being talented. Hbo president just reisgned 6 days ago, you could write them or wait and see what happens next.

FYI - they all still Call Bonnie Canino for the girls names and numbers! They always have both male and Female promoter just never let her to the matching (man's world). No disrespect to Lucia but it really was the moive - i still think of Kick Boxing when I hear her name first! Canino knows all the girls world wide from thier Amatuer to Pro Careers. She has always been involved just to d**n humble and wanting to make the Sport Big not herself and has never left it (boxing) to return later to make money on the backisde. not that she hasn't tried it has just been years in fighting for the right!

Yvonne-- So true, Bonnie KNOWS the sport, the names, the records and the personalities. Further, she is totally respected. So you make an excellent point about her "total package" of obvious skills.
I know she promoted a little bit locally/regionally but not sure how that faired out.
The big men's promoters know its very hard to survive without: Headliner, sizeable local venue, sizeable local following for headliner...and a great story line, IE- ABC goes to war with XYC on D-DAY! Lining up all of those items for the first card is extremely important because if one is missing, there won't be a second card.
