Referee David Mendoza stopped the bout in the sixth and final round. Christy Martin had broken her right hand early in the fourth round and was unable to continue although she was ahead on the scorecards.
Martin reportedly broke three bones in her hand in the fourth and tried to fight using only her left hand. She pulled up hurt after throwing a right hand that connected in the first minute of the sixth, winced and tucked her right hand under her left arm. The ring doctor then advised that the referee stop the fight, resulting in TKO win for Dakota Stone.

This was the second time Martin's broken her right hand while fighting Dakota Stone - last time it was in the final round of a ten rounder and she was able to finish the fight. Also landing the same punch, an overhand right.

www.theglowingedge.com/christy-martin-breaks-hand-wins-title/Dakota Stone's reported comment when Martin broke her hand in their first fight: “I’ve broken my hand in fights and nobody knew it,” Stone said. “I didn’t let it show and I didn’t play that card like she did in there, making sure everybody knew she broke her hand.”

Layla McCarter fought almost half an eight rounder with Jelena Mrdjenovich in June 2005 with her left arm broken. www.nabfnews.com/nabf-mainmenu-87/archives/132-at-its-best-boxing-is-a-thing-of-beauty.html"Mrdjenovich ducked into a McCarter left hook, fracturing McCarters forearm ... When the Las Vegas fighter came back to the corner it was obvious something was wrong. When asked by the ring doctor at the end of the fifth and each subsequent round, if she wanted to continue. McCarter's response was the same, she refused to quit. Instead she came out in a southpaw stance and did the best she could to remain competitive and valiantly tried to win the fight. In the high paced bout, the Las Vegas fighter took punch after punch on her broken arm, but somehow fought through the pain. After the fight, as I watched the ringside doctor put a makeshift splint on McCarter's arm, the lightweight, who is always a great interview, described what she had been through. "I refused to get knocked out or lose by a knockout," said McCarter, while nursing an obviously swollen left hand. "That would devastate me. My arm was in a lot of pain so I had to adjust. Every time Jelena punched the arm it kind of made me cringe, folded me."

Christy looked great, aside from the broken hand, which I saw...it looked like it had a tennis ball growing out of the top of it. Its NOT a loss, in my opinion as she won the fight, knocked Dakota down and was imposing her will and punches.
However, she needs to have the hand worked on.
To all the nay sayers, ALL BROKEN HANDS ARE NOT BROKEN EQUALLY. If we all felt things and broke things exactly the same way, we'd be robots.
Obviously Christy maybe one of the toughest ladies to ever fight, gunshots, knife wounds, beatings from her husband and broken hands and she still ROCKS THE RING!
Maybe Arum can set her up with a great ortho surgeon who can straighten out dem bones in her right hand...? Nah, that would be too nice.

Strong and Crazy must run down a line with some of these people, what would have made more sense was take a lose, fix the arm and have a rematch, instead of destroying your arm. Marcos broke her arm but she wasn't fighting a tough opponent though, I hope this doesn't happen to her again or in a similar situation such as this.

what would have made more sense was take a lose, fix the arm and have a rematch, instead of destroying your arm. McCarter did lose that fight but then she went back to Edmonton (Mrdjenovich's hometown) and won the rematch. She's as tough as they come and she is also a great boxer who had the skills to go several rounds against a good opponent with only one punching hand.

Soft tissue injury around a broken bone can hurt a hell of a lot more than the break itself does because it involves more nerves and blood vessels. A wrapped hand also doesn't have room to swell but it's still trying to - Martin's hand probably ballooned up as soon as it was unwrapped. Medics want to ice and immobilize hand injury asap, not for you to keep on throwing punches with it.
So this must have been a tough call for everyone involved with only 51 seconds left in a fight Martin would have won unless Stone had knocked her down or out. 51 seconds could look like a long time to a medic but it's a d**n short part of 42 years, and the 50th win would have been a huge deal for Martin after what she just came through. It's too bad her comeback fight ended like that and I hope she has a great hand surgeon and therapist to (literally) straighten out the damage.
