This would be the boxing story of the year ( I know, its early in the year). But if Christy Martin can fight in Jan.-Feb. after being shot and stabbed by her husband, then we really are talking about a Super Warrior's Super Comeback!.
IMO, Christy is the heart and soul of boxing. She always fought her ass off, always came to knock out her opponent, never backed off and took on anybody. Almost anybody, Lucia Rijker excepted.
Meanwhile, when I see some of the fights WBAN wants to see, I laugh outloud. Ceilla Braekus- Holm? WHO DAT? WHY DAT?
Look, Holm isn't gonna leave New Mexico. She is the Champion of New Mexico, no doubt about that. But to get her to leave "town" would take an act of Congress OR a dump truck full of $50 bills.
What I still don't quite get, How can Lenny be her promoter and her manager? Ain't that NON_KOSHER? Anyone know? Todd?

You can not have both, but what most do is put another name on etc. I fought Kim Harris and Peter was promoting, but he used a Corp name and was not listed in the corp as promoter so he could manager her. Happens all the time. Don King has people who work for him training and manager his fighters then promotes the show. It is what it is and happens way more than you know!

TD First Christy Martin's return I agree that Christy Martin was a pioneer in the sport and because of her alot of progress in the sport has been made but I don't agree with her returning to the ring. With Mia St John on the card, alot of fighters lost opportunities to fight against opponents. we know promoters pick boxers for their fame and if they are an easy mark Fighters like Christy Martin and Mia st John should be helping other young ladies who want to help box professional in this country instead of taking the rug from them. Top Rank is basically using Christy martin, because her name is in the news and because of her status instead of using many other good fighters who want a chance this is similar to Mia St JOhn fighting Rola El Halab ( which was horrible) and then Kaliesha vs Angel Gladney( Angel got ko'd which was no surprise to anyone) Christy should be helping a female boxers get on Top Rank's card instead of being on their herself. Second Holm vs Braekhus I am going to tell you why it might happen In the terms of money certain international money is greater than the dollar such as the Yen, Yuan and Euro Lenny probably wants the money and if Holm could shut up Cecilia Braekhus in her own home, Holm would be come a super champion more famous than Susi K, regina Halmich and Ragosina Also if you look at records, Braekhus hasn't beaten by anyone special, Lenny figures that gains is probably better than the loss Braekhus is fighting in February either against Holm or Danielle Smith..I am hoping not Jill Emery but will have to wait and see Oh yeah fyi Carina Moreno is fighting against Yessica Bopp at the end of this January

Is that illegal or against the law because I don't know? I understand why some people do it, to find a good manager and a good promoter and to promote a male or a female is difficult And then a risk of a manager and promoter dispute, its better to have the fighter in distance where you can see them then far away Still many managers would try take advantage of a promoter but I can see how this is also wrong.

Ok, fact is Bob would not have any woman on the card if it wasn't Christy. So she is helping female boxing in that way. But He really doesn't care about the publicity, come on people he is trying to stick it to Don King a little. Don't be surprised if he has her fight in FL - King's backyard and her home state. Politics gotta lovem

Yvonne-- R U sayin Don King is "the Man" and Arum is trying to stick it to him. Big Deal. They've done that their whole career...the back and forth has made fighters alot of money. One day I want to hear DK talk about running into Tyson in the lobby of a hotel. Wonder who told Tyson that DK was there...?
I have total respect for Christy, she fights like a freight train headin down hill with about 500 extra logs stoking the engine.
I heard female fighters carp about her and guess what happened? Nothing. They did nothing, she did nothing and the sport got nothing. No nothing.
However, when threw that first left hook to the body, the sport got respect...did you watch her fight Ali? If she had about 6 inchs more of reach Ali would be selling Slim Jims at a convenience store somewhere. Of course, she didn't and Ali planted her but hell, it took a huge amount of guts for Christy to get in the ring with Ali. Gotta love that.

TD, I gotta go Bob Dole on ya here. As Bob was fond of saying, "I know it, you know it and the American people know it." And the "IT" is a simple but yet supremely profound truth. Christy Martin is totally IRRELEVANT in the sport of women's boxing in 2011. As irrelevant as a Plymouth Volare. As irrelevant as an IBM typewriter. As irrelevant as a Sony Cassette Walkman. As irrelevant as a poster of Shaun Cassidy. Need I go on? And as for Bob Arum, he knows less about women's boxing than I do about landing a 747 Jumbo at Hong Kong International Airport. I stick to what I say, Christy should be helping other fighters get a chance. I don't know why Arum is doing this and I don't know if he will let other female boxers get on his companys card but only time will tell I will honestly say I don't know Holly or Lenny but I have actually emailed Lenny and got a response but to make a guess why they won't fight over there is purely assumption, you should email him. But I will say this that If any one could Ko Cecilia it will be Holly, she has ko'd Ann Sacaurato and Duda Yankovich and those weren't pushover fighters like Cecilia's fighters

Jason, thanx for the compliment. To be sure, I mean no disrespect for Martin as a person. If her husband is found guilty of the domestic assault related charges, he should spend the remaining days of his life here on planet earth confined to a prison cell. And I don't for a second doubt Martin's courage and toughness when dealing with life; in and out of the ring. But Martin's time as the "face" of women's boxing ended more than a decade ago. Look at how sad it is to see Evander Holyfield still trying to compete. Even the great ones have to move on. Some just have a deeply misguided sense of self-perception. If Martin really, really needs the paycheck that Arum will pay her for this event, that would be the ONLY positive point to this fight taking place. And one more thing, Jason, thanx for high-liting some of the blemishes of Martin's record. It just proves she is all too-human, as we all are. But as she got deeper into her boxing career, QUALITY WINS eluded her grasp.

Jason--my point, SHE WAS 145lb fighter, who weighed 157(?) when she took on an Ali that was, what, 162...I disagree with the Holm decision and she BEAT Dakota Stone...so your line of thinking is KAPUT. At 43 years old, she is OLD for a male fighter. But you know what, at 43 years old and if she makes <145, she will go in there and swing hard, NOT cover up like OLD-SHOT fighters do...and I will place my money on her. Dam, Jason, she's 5'4"...she weighed in in street clothes for Ali and had coins in her pocket ( 157 vs Ali's 162- yeah sure). TD

However if Christy Martin is desperate for money, she could be a trainer or a manager because their are many female fighters who could probably use her help. I wouldn't say something if I wasn't sure of it. Christy Martin broke her hand in her last fight and she has just been scrapping the bottom of the barrel. Jason, I didn't mean to imply that you disliked or hated Martin. And nothing you posted presents itself that way. Like me, you are being a true realist - and KUDOS for that!!! I just wanted to clarify my own feelings. Which basically boil down to 2 points. 1. Martin is worthy of respect for her "true grit" which she displayed in her career, all the losses included. POINT #2. Talking about some "comeback" for her in 2011 is just ridiculous. Utter nonsense. Well, I guess there were 3 points. #3 is that Arum is ignorant when it comes to women's boxing. Now I did chuckle at TD's attempt to portray Martin when she fights as some kind of mythic "freight train" screamin' down a steep mountain grade with the brakes burnt out and the boiler about to burst. Sounds like an unreleased Johnny Cash song from the mid 60's. Now for a dose of reality. Hardcore reality. Yes, sometimes it's brutal. But here is a more accurate description using the train analogy. TD, I would advise you NOT to look at this. All others, proceed. swamplot.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/hermann-park-train.jpg

Which woman fighter, today, packs more punching power per pound than Christy Martin---there is NONE, except Lucia Rijker or Anne Wolf.
The only ENTITY that can retire a fighter is the FAN. That's right, when FANS don't want to pay a dime to see you, then you have to retire.
Arum's role in signing any fighter is always suspect, but you can't say that Arum doesn't know fans and that he doesn't know boxing.
My bet, he showcases Christy, sells plenty of tickets, gets tons of FREE news coverage, makes money and pays her decently and then signs her to another fight. Who will that be? Hummm, what was Christy's only regret, besides fighting in New Mexico...? Wonder who she really wanted to fight...? Humm, wonder who really wanted to fight her...?
Look if Christy Martin says she's hankering to fight, there ain't NOBODY that can tell her no different, knowhatimsayin. Like I said, 6 more inchs of reach and Ali would have been drilled like virgin pine. Drilled hard.

Christy is not only the biggest puncher, pound 4 pound, but she has the best footwork and balance. If she gets in real fighting shape, <138 lbs, she will astound many a fighter.
Who knows, say Christy KOs 2 fighters in her first 2 Arum promoted bouts...then Lucia wakes up one morning, looks at the small jelly roll around her gut and says ONE MO TIME...
We'll see what the PR train brings to town, weather Christy can still hop around and bang non-stop...shot fighters STOP moving, lose balance, throw alot less punches and get tagged twice as much as they did.
IS CHRISTY MARTIN SHOT ( no pun intended on her recent misfortune) OR DOES SHE HAVE A FEW LOGS LEFT TO STOKE A FIERCE FIRE?

I wouldn't walk across the street to watch a boring-ass Christy Martin fight if I had 2 free ringside seats, there was free beer and my date for the night was a Penthouse Pet. Todd---don't give up on Christy. She has alot of motivation. She really could re-start interest in the sport. You remember what OLD George Foreman did.
I know you've been rooting for a Breakus-Holm fight for quite awhile. Pretty darn impractical as each of those fighters won't leave home. And neither will fill an auditorium if its NOT their home venue. So, yeah, its a tough fight to imagine happening. Put it this way, Laila Ali could NOT win in New Mexico. Why would Breakus even try to do that? MONEY. Only reason, IMO.
Christy has been a road warrior since her break with DK. Now, she's back with a promoter. It will be interesting to see who Arum matchs her with as that will tell alot. But weather you like watching her fight or not, you have to hand it to her---Christy Martin ISN"T afraid of anything. To me, that always makes her interesting.

CHRISTY WILL FIGHT (rematch) DAKOTA STONE ON PPV. Once again, Christy has a huge chance to re-invigorate women's boxing. And its only fitting that she does it on Pay Per View. I don't know about your POV on this, but DAM, she is presents a compelling story; Knockout power, a fountain of courage, a huge heart, a love story gone wrong, a gunshot/knife wound survivor and now she's fighting for her life once again in the ring. Dakota Stone has her chance at redemption too. She lost to Christy so now she has a chance to re-write that by beating her on PPV.
Better still, when Arum takes a Vegas fight to NYC for press coverage, you know he's onto something. People want to know if she can do it, if she can deal with the intensity of the emotional strain caused by being almost mortally wounded by someone you love. My gawd, this is overloaded with PROMO POWER! I hope Christy drops her weight, does her roadwork and burns hard like she did when she fought Deidre way back when on the undercard of a Mike Tyson fight.
Christy can kick start alot of interest in women's boxing which has turned into a local/regional/ hometown deal with little or NO national interest. If any women fighters out there want to hitch a ride, get to that fight and support Christy. She fought her ass off and took women to the forefront of media attention.

Ava has the skill to take on Ana Maria Torres and not be stopped or tko'd, she should at least have got Usanakorn Koietgym. Usanakorn was almost as close to also beating Ana Maria Torres. Gloria should have stuck to her weightclass, I am glad she didn't get hurt badly. If Goldenboy wanted to promote Gloria then they should have found some good minimum weight fighters which can be found in huge numbers in Japan, Thailand, the Phillipines. I already said Kaliesha vs Angel was a very bad idea. Kaliesha vs Ava might have been interesting or Anita of Denmark or Zulina Munoz. Top Rank should have given Maria Lindberg the chance to fight Christy in America even though MAria would have sqaushed Christy. Maria is a young fighter unlike Dakota and Christy, and she needs to be given a shot, she has already proven she can handle opponents like Achieng. These promoters especially Top Rank were so worried of risking their promotion by putting a female athlete on the card but the problem is if you are paying attention to the sport and not putting a random Jane, Mary Elizabeth or Connie, you will make money. The problem is promoters want to do enough to get by. Boxing you take risk, life you take risk and promoting you would think has to have some risk involved.

I wouldn't walk across the street to watch a boring-ass Christy Martin fight if I had 2 free ringside seats, there was free beer and my date for the night was a Penthouse Pet. If not for the derisive comments that started this thread about a Holm - Breakhus World Title Fight being a joke, I wouldn't have even posted any comments here. Not a word. hahahahahaha oh my!
