True to her vow this morning during the weigh-ins, Villalobos was looking for the knockout and forced to turn the fight into a brawl. Julaton banked on her boxing and her jabs to score points all night and control the fight. Villalobos picked the pace up in the third round and landed big shots that reddened Julaton's face. Julaton maintained her composure despite Villalobos roughing up tactics and was able to nullify the Mexican's sudden bursts and pressure with her footwork and her jabs. After 10 rounds of back and forth action, Julaton was declared the new WBO super bantamweight champ via split decision with scores of 96-94,96-94 Julaton and one judge scoring it 97-94 for Villalobos. I scored the fight at press box 96-94 for Julaton.

www.fightnews.com/Boxing/julaton-edges-villalobos-51338By Dave Baggs at ringside Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton had her hands full with Mexico’s Maria Villalobos through 10 rounds, coming out on top with a split decision victory to take the vacant WBO Super Bantamweight title. Scores of the bout read 96-94, 96-94 for Julaton while the third judge gave it to Villalobos 97-93. Julaton, who finished the bout with a purple welt under her left eye, appeared to have hit the canvas in round 3 but it was ruled no knockdown. Villalobos (6-4. 3KOs) had the power to hurt Julaton (7-2-1, 1KO), which she did on several occasions, but simply did not thrown enough punches in each round to sway the judges in her favor. When the decision was announced, a clear round of boos followed with the crowd voicing their opinion of the verdict given.
