This article by Patrick Espejo appeared this morning in El Comercio, Lima's main newspaper: Kina Malpartida defendera su titulo mundial en el coliseo Dibos el 20 de junio (Kina Malpartida will defend her world title in the Dibos Coliseum on June 20th) www.elcomercio.com.pe/noticia/267311/kina-malpartida-defendera-su-titulo-mundial-coliseo-dibos-20-junioMain points: Kina Malpartida will have a title defense on June 20th, at 10:00pm. The fight will take place in the coliseo Eduardo Dibós in the San Borja district of the city of Lima, Peru. The Dibós has capacity for 6,000 spectators, 500 of them on ringside seats. Because the demand for people wanting to see the fight will likely exceed this, there's the possibility that a giant screen will be installed in parks and/or squares throughout the city. The most likely opponent for Kina is Halana dos Santos, from Brazil, but this is yet to be confirmed.

dos Santos maybe has only lost once and has all those kos under her belt. But the quality of opponent? www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?cat=boxer&human_id=394431Pretty much most of them have been debutants...so I wouldn't guess that Malpartida would have too much difficulty. Still, easy first defence and then a more interesting bout, perhaps?

Indeed. Halana Dos Santos has been very active but mostly against weak opponents so she does not even cross the threshold for being ranked by WBAN. Malpartida has had some tough losses including a TKO by Ela Nunez, but she has been tested against tough opposition. She has been knocked down and got back up, physically and mentally, and she will be fighting in her country of birth for the first time, so I think the odds are strongly in Kina's favor. As you say, after that it could get a lot more interesting ....

www.womenboxing.com/NEWS2009/news040309hernandez.htm(APR 3) WBAN received a letter from Melissa "Huracan" Hernandez about her desire to fight Kina Malpartida, that she feels would be a great fight. She told WBAN, "Sue, I'm writing you this letter not as a call out but more of a great fight for womyn's [women's] boxing. I'm willing to put up my WIBA at 130 for a chance to gain her WBA at 130 in a unification bout. I believe in one champion and right now there are three. A fight between me and Malpartida would make a lot of the right noise needed in womyn's boxing showing true championship spirit. Not the usual mismatched title shots. So I'm saying if Malpartida believes she's a true champion-- let her face another champion. Let's make a true champion at the 130 lb division."

After hype like that, I'm ready to buy a ticket! don't be ridiculous Rick, this fight will end in less than 4 rounds, Kalanna will lose unless she gets home town decision or unleashes some unpredictable power.

I haven't had time to watch much but there's plenty of footage on youtube of the fight and from what I have seen Kina was faster, stronger and overall simply better than the game Brazilian.

I am surprised that Kina didn't finish Santos before the 7th round but I guess there are probably a lot of factors on that going into that problem. Thanks for the information Martin and Aldo

So is Kina a late developer or has she simply struck it lucky to have faced two game but mediocre fighters in her last two bouts? I ask this given that she was beaten by Rhonda Luna and Ela Nuñez in her two fights previous to these, one of which she was down in, the other which she lost TKO.

I am going to say not luck because when a trainer and a manager find a fighter they pick a fighter who is available, and some times they pick a fighter that will make their team look good. Kina has become a rising star and like in Germany with Susi K they know that their fighter must be strong and put on a good show for everyone. I will hope in the future that Kina will face more good fighters or she will end up like Maureen shea .... how ironic lol

Thats good to see Maureen shea doing well, i have nothing against her at all. Ask her who she plans on fighting next, please Rick Fights should not be predictable but unpredictable if you can predict who can win in a fight, what reason is there to fight the person in the first place.

All I know is that after Bernie McCoy posted his article about Kina on WBAN, there are 65 angry replies in Spanish on Kina's facebook.com fan page lol. A very close friend of mine said that women's boxing needs someone to be a real villain and call out top boxers in a very mean way to reenergize the sport. David Haye walking around wearing a t-shirt with him holding the decapitated heads of the Klitchskos was the example I was given. That guy is something...

This is really ridiculous. Bernie Mccoy is just begging Kina to fight better oponents You look at any Mexico, Brazil, Argentianian fighter in those area fight mediocore opponents and then they get titles, for not the much work kinda like here. I think the boxing community should take boxing serious and learn and want the best. Alesia Graf barely won against Zulina Munoz but if Zulina had fought better opponents in her wait class she would and could have beaten Alesia First who should be upset Kina Malpartida or her fans or supporters of women boxing? She, kina could have given her opponent brain damage....

And I agree with you completely. That's all Bernie was doing; he wants what's best for the sport. But you know how fans are; they don't go to the source and read the article themselves; they take what the response is and make threats and call Bernie names and all this other stuff. All they got was Kina doesn't fight the best fighters and all the best fighters are in the United States. That wasn't the true message of the article.
